Only textbook I've ever finished reading after the class was over. Stuffed full of fantastic images and written in a casual langauge that makes it easy to read and, more importantly, gets to the point. Every line of every paragraph has something to add, unlike so many textbooks that like to ramble. Only little nitpick is that with all the huge images taking up sometimes a full spread of two pages the text and the images they are talking about frequently land on separate pages, so you'll find yourself flipping back and forth a lot. A tiny problem for a book that is a fantastic read for anyone even sort of interested in manga or even Japanese history and culture.

Helped me with and Art Paper
Great read and a wonderful resource. This really helped me during a research paper I did on Japanese art. Alot of the information in the book is presented in an easily comprehensible fashion

Amazing
More than just a "how to draw manga" manual, this book is excellent for those who try to understand the way manga works. The autor gives you a complete tour through the history of manga giving you social and political background as well as parallel artistical creations, so you can compare and draw conclutions. If its not enough, Brigitte Koyama tries to explain the history of this secuential art through the lives of their significant representatives, such as Hokusai, Rakuten and Tezuka.

Disappointed...
Didn't like the book all that much... I really enjoy modern manga (1980s and forward), but the book focuses way too much (about 75%) on old Japanese art styles and their influence on current manga. There is a lot of text, and the pictures of modern day manga are very small and uninspired. Defiantly not what I was expecting...
