Sparkling movie
Fabulous performances by Hepburn and Peck. The movie feels timeless and fresh even though it’s 70 years old.

"Roman Holiday" (1953) and "Sabrina" (1954) were Audrey Hepburns two best movies....but "Roman Holiday" was the best of the two.
"Roman Holiday" (1953) and "Sabrina" (1954) were Audrey Hepburns two best movies....but "Roman Holiday" was the best of the two. Both movies were about royalty and servants interacting, intriguing, scheming, always in interesting settings beautifully presented. The audience gets to see where royalty in both Rome and New York City work and play and "do their thing" with the help of very smart, self-interested servants. The two movies are packed with actor talent.Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck, Humphry Bogart, and William Holden were all Best Actor/Actress Academy Award winners, assisted with wonderful support from old time actor pros including Eddie Albert, Walter Hampton, and Francis X. Bushman (who co-starred in the "Ben Hur" Ramon Navarro silent spic in 1923).Both screenplays are interesting, well written, and present a story line totally unpredictable and compelling. The reason "Roman Holiday" (1953) is the best of the two wonderful movies is the difference between New York City and Rome.New York City isn't beautiful, and Rome is.At least the way these two great movies show the two cities (I was born in NYC and lived there.....I know NYC has its good points). The royalty shown in Rome know and love good art, dance, and varied good times, and take the time off from their burdens to taste those things. The "royalty" shown in New York City (the "Larrabee" family industrialist millionaire socialites....America's version of "royalty") are dull, efficiency expert, profit hungry machines who object to beauty and loveliness, and try to assassinate it (her) when it (she)...."Sabrina" played by the incredible Audrey Hepburn....gets in their way.Roman royalty (played by Hepburn) is better than USA royalty (played by Bogart and family).Hepburn comes out on the good side in both movies...classy princess in one and classy servant in the other, and was never better in her entire actor career. But her "Roman Holiday" (1953) movie was the best of all.She played "good royalty" (with good values) in "Roman Holiday" (1953) and a "good servant chauffeur's daughter training to become a cook" in "Sabrina" (1954).A role model lady for all to see and savor, the likes of whom have seldom ever been portrayed as well, or with as much class (in both movies) as in "Roman Holiday" (1953) and "Sabrina" (1954).-----------Written by Tex Allen, SAG Actor.

One of my favorites.
This is one of my favorite films. My kid is becoming a film buff so I had to show her this.Audrey Hepburn is the bored princess whose life is controlled as she does her princess duties day after day after day.She decides to escape and see life as everybody else lives it. Eventually; Gregory Peck appears and gives her a place to sleep as she is too exhausted to talk and it's late. He realizes who she is and decides to make money with a story and pictures of day in life of the princess.Eddie Albert plays the photographer and joins them on a romp through Rome. Scooter ride, crammed into a car, visiting people and places, a dance and a fight on a boat.In this time Joe Bradley (Peck) and the princess fall in love though never spoken. As with all good things; it must end and the princess decides she has to return to her life as her country is upset when they learn she is missing. They drop her off and watch her walk away as she does not want to them to know who she really is.The next day is a press conference. Peck and Albert are sent. The princess has a panic moment as she realizes the two are a reporter and a photographer. The ending is bitter sweet. The princess now understands her position and starts taking command. She does the unorthodox approach of wanting to meet members of the press. She is relieved when she understands they won't say anything and Albert gives her a gift of the photos. She greets Joe and both want what they can't have. A relationship. So much said without words. She leaves and we are left with Joe simply staring. You can almost feel his pain of wanting a woman he will never have. He turns and walks away.Stream wise? No issues with the film.

Good but slow at times
I loved the time period and seeing Europe in the 1950s. The plot was entertaining and original even for today's movies. The clothing from that time and the location reminded me of simpler times. It was a feel good movie and would recommend for others to watch.

Stars in their glitter!
Deservedly successful in its time, this film still holds up well, with the benefit of well-cast leads, greatlocations from another age and an ageless theme of royalty and commoner forming an alliance thatleaves them both richer - and us to leave them with a smile on our faces. Director, William Wyler, whoseepic "Ben Hur" is perhaps his most significant cinematice achievement, despite Oscars for previous films, clearly enjoyed this chance at a romantic comedy, and his bankable star Gregory Peck is a generous foilfor the persence of Audrey Hepburn, making a full Hollywood film debut that catured an Oscar of her own.
