It doesn't quite Amaze, but it has its merits.
Ever since its jump to another company's arms, Crash Bandicoot has been degraded from a wacky marsupial with attitude to a hobo-like creature with a whiny voice. While I'm not too fond of Crash's new character design, Crash of the Titans is actually not too bad of a game. At least not for the Nintendo DS. It's a 3D platformer with a linear perspective that's almost exactly like that of Naughty Dog's PS1 trilogy (complete with a few 2D sections and bonus areas). However, there's still a lot to be desired.Yes, the platforming does feel pretty good, and Crash's fighting moves aren't too shabby, but the level designs are blander than they should have been. There are a bunch of boxes to smash up, and there are collectables, but there is a major lack of any sort of real punch that the older games have been peppered with. Instead, the focus is almost solely on the combat, which isn't too bad, but if you're going to make this a platforming game, you may as well put effort into those aspects, too. That said, the combat's okay. It can be ultimately satisfying to beat the crap out of an enemy, and it's even better when you get to hijack an enemy and use him for your own benefits. To the game's credit, it does get more strategic as to which enemy to take over, and some of the moves are pretty cool to unleash. It would have been nice if there were more fighting sound effects, though. Your normal hits are near-silent.Lastly, there's the matters of the overall presentation, and even that, like all else I mentioned, is a mixed bag. The game does show polish in some areas, but not in others. There are a decent amount of cutscenes with fully-voiced dialogue, but the writing tries too hard to land a joke (going as far as to have a laugh track for the supposedly funny lines spoken). The graphics look remarkably great for a DS title, but the music is considerably average and pales in comparison to the catchy and fun tracks of its predecessors. There's definitely some good things about this game, while there's also things about it that should have been improved on. If you're curious, and/or are a Crash Bandicoot fan, there is some fun to be had, but don't have high hopes for it.
