Question 1

I have converted my 40,000 gal swimming pool into a large goldfish and turtle pond. I grow water plants on the steps. The main problem I have is with a thin dark green coating of algae on the pond (concrete) walls and the floor. The water is slightly cloudy, but has no floating algae on the top. Right now, when I v…

Accepted Answer

First, we do not recommend its use with turtles, since it has never been tested on them, and they have skin that they can absorb chemicals through. Second, if the algae you are referring to is actually short like hairs, this is a beneficial algae called hair algae, and unless there is an overabundance of it, we do not recommend killing it all off. It provides food for animal life, and helps to filter and balance the pond. And last, it might be more cost effective, and healthier for your animal life to try barley straw pillows instead as this will help control algae in an all natural fashion and has been known to be very effective in properly maintained ponds. Question 4

How long on average does it take to start working? Our pond is 125 gallons and pretty green right now. There's no visible string algae.

Accepted Answer

Hello SDB!This is a slow moving product, so it won't start clearing for at least 24-48 hours. However, give it a full 72 hours to do its job before deciding if you need a second treatment or not. If the pond is heavily stocked or has not had a recent partial water change, we recommend changing out around 25% of the water, and then applying a second dose. Don't forget to check your filters and clean them out as necessary, and remove any dead algae from the pond to prevent oxygen loss and toxicity issues.
