The Best of Johnny Carson and Friends

No one replaced him. When he folded up the tent and retired he took the Tonight Show with him. He was the best talk show on late night television. Thank God for the DVDs and YouTube. Johnny Carson lives on via his tapes and DVDs. Rest in peace. But you must note that Johnny Carson is NOT in all of these episodes and some of these are GRAINY transfers but they do capture the audio of some of America's greatest comics. This title is a bit misleading because you might think that Johnny Carson is in all the episodes, he is NOT but that is why you need to buy the DVD from his Tonight show.

-Disliked, to a high degree: The cover of this multi-disc box has a large photo of Johnny Carson, with "The Best Of" right above his name and "35 episodes" above his ear. It says "and Friends!" underneath, which led me to think it would be his show guests. Not. He was only on 1.5 discs. The rest were various other comedy shows, with the exception of a Milton Berle sweep of disc 4.-Liked, to a high degree: Many of the best comedy of the years which many of today's adults missed in the earlier days of television. The younger set should see what television was like when it was live and generally without videotape editing. Also, cleaner: no gutter language, no sexual innuendos-At 23 hours, I think it's a good buy for this 4-disc set. But don't be misled by the large Carson photo on the front and his name in large print.-I think this easily deserves 5-stars overall for the quality of the product. It gets 3-stars only because the front cover is so deceptive. It's not the best of Johnny Carson, but the best of many quality comedians of the early years.

Purchased this for my 81 year old step-father. He was very excited and played it right away. He said it brought back a lot of memories and he really enjoyed watching it.

The title is very misleading since it is not the best of Johnny Carson and most is not about Johnny Carson at all. I was expecting to see some of the Tonight shows but what you get is some of Johnny's very early shows when he was just getting started. That was interesting and would have been fine if they had also included some of his later shows. He was not so funny in his early days and the shows where he was the host of a quiz show were very lame. I did enjoy some of the Dean Martin shows. The old comedy shows are fun but the DVD is mistitled.

Bought this for my Dad as well as a Johnny Carson favorite moments from the Tonight Show video; he absolutely loved this one as well. He can't stop talking about it, every time he watches some of it, he calls me to tell me about it. This was a great purchase!

These four DVDs are a mix of old time shows, including the Johnny Carson Show. The quality isn't the greatest, but it isn't bad considering how old the original films are and the poor quality of television films were to begin with. For the price ($5-6), one can't really complain about the quality. It is an interesting DVD set to watch to gain some insight on what television was like back in the mid-50's.

Funny what it was like on tv back then

Thought this would have Johnny Carson in all shows, but it did not. He was in a few old shows, especially "Who Do You Trust," but the rest of the shows were other comedians. Felt this was false advertising through the cover just showing Johnny. Some will buy this who have never heard of the other artists and who expect, as I did, some tonight shows.

Hasn't time-travelled too well. A. Bit dated but loads of interesting content. Not just Carson but a lot more besides.

I was disappointed in this DVD - but that's my own fault. I assumed it was various episodes of The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, but it's not. I didn't realize that Johnny Carson had his own show prior called "The Johnny Carson Show", and that's what these are. Not nearly as humourous as the Tonight Show. So just know - if you're looking for episodes of the Tonight Show .... these aren't them!
