The Buk Buk Buk Festival

Silly story with eye-catching illustration
My family was first introduced to the work of Mary Jane Auch when my son was in fourth grade and his class read Auch's historical-fiction chapter books Journey to Nowhere, Frozen Summer, and The Road To Home. He enjoyed them all, and he isn't usually a big fan of fiction at all. So when I was looking for books to read to a four-year-old, I was delighted to find that Mary Jane and Herm Auch have also written picture books. The story is cute, simple, and silly--- Henrietta writes a book, but doesn't mention to the publisher or the book fair organizers that she is, in fact, a chicken. This leads to some complications when she appears at the book fair aka the Buk Buk Buk Festival. Some of the humor in this book is definitely aimed at the parents, and sure, the puns are absolute groaners (egg-ceedingly, hum-drumsticks, egg- citing, etc)....but for us it presented a great example of how to play pun-run, in which you attempt to have a conversation where each person uses as many ( bird-related words, fish-related words, or whatever) as possible. The illustrations are some combination of drawing and collage, "digitally created" according to the book jacket...they're cute, crisp, and brightly colored. I'm still trying to figure out what techniques they used, but they're very clever. This is apparently the third book in a series featuring Henrietta the chicken, but you don't need to have read the previous books, this stands on its own.

Ignore A Regan.
The book is interesting and has a lot of chicken puns. My kids liked it. They thought it was egg-cellent.

Not good
It's nonsensical, the jokes fall flat, and my kids didn't like it. I didn't enjoy reading it. I'm glad we got this from the library instead of buying it.
