The bulb that prevents us from interrupting my remotely working husband
I bought this bulb for my husband, who works remotely. His office space is in the basement near the laundry area, so the rest of the family was having to creep down the stairs to make sure we wouldn't be interrupting a meeting or call by going down there to work on our laundry. I had been looking for a way for us to be able to tell immediately whether it is okay to go downstairs and stumbled upon this listing. It sounded like the perfect solution since the hall light is right outside the door that leads to the basement. Once my husband put the bulb in the light fixture, he downloaded the app and set up the connection. He was so excited when he could change the colors with just a tap on his screen. The available widget is perfect for this! The whole family knows that if the hallway is glowing red, we're going to have to wait to take care of things downstairs. It does exactly what we wanted and expected it to do. It did disconnect from our Wi-Fi once, but it was so easy to reconnect that it wasn't an issue. Sometimes connections just need to be reset and this might have been one of those instances. I would definitely buy this again for both this same situation or if another area of the house needs a visual alert.

These Tapo smart bulbs are fantastic! Setup was quick, and they work flawlessly with Alexa and Google Home. The color options are vibrant, brightness is perfect, and scheduling is super convenient. Energy-saving mode is a bonus. Great value for the price—highly recommend for anyone looking to upgrade their lighting!

Poor wifi range
These lights are great! One drawback, which took me some time to figure out is their wifi antenna is significantly less effective than other wifi devices; probably about 50% reduction in effectiveness compared to my phone. I had devices on my front porch and garage which in worst case were about 35' away from my TP Link range extender (which is working great unlike other range extenders I've tried) and they kept cycling betwween online and offline. Turning the front porch / garage light switch off then back on seemed to resolve the problem for about 1 minute, then 3 of the 4 devices fell off the network again. The one light that didn't seem to have this problem was the closest (about 15' away) to the range extender. All 4 devices reported no bars in the RSSI (signal strength) area of Tepo app (just the dot was illuminated at the bottom of the 'bars' icon). Moving the range extender about 15' closer to the 4 bulbs resolved the problem. Signal strength reported one bar for all four bulbs and now they work reliably. Range extender is on our hallway about 5' from the front door, whereas when they weren't working the range extender was about 20' from the front door.

Reliable Smart Bulbs That Work Perfectly with Alexa and Google Home
I have these Tapo TP-Link Smart Light Bulbs installed all over my house—around 50 of them—and they have been working perfectly. Setup is easy, and they connect smoothly with both Alexa and Google Home. Voice commands work reliably, colors are vibrant, and brightness control is smooth. The RGBW color options are great, and the bulbs respond quickly with no noticeable lag. After using so many of these throughout the house, I can confidently say they’re consistent and dependable. I’ve had no issues with connectivity or performance. Overall, these are excellent smart bulbs with great compatibility and reliability. Highly recommended if you’re building or expanding a smart home setup.

So many uses and works perfectly
I love these bulbs, I've bought several now. I originally purchased them because my kid's lights and fans are on the same switch, so rather than pulling the chain to turn the light off if we want to leave the fan on at night, we can turn the light off from our phone. They also like to play around with the colors. I was also going to purchase new dusk-dawn fixtures for my outdoor lights, but I put these bulbs in instead and they work perfectly. I am able to set them on a schedule to turn on at sunset and turn off at sunrise, or you can adjust based on sunrise/sunset (for example, turn on 10 minutes before sunset), or set your own time. It's also fun being able to do different colors, like red white and blue for 4th of July. I also set one up in the hallway outside of my office working from home to have a red light when I'm on a call or cannot be bothered, and a green light at the end of the day when it's okay for the kids to come in while I wrap a few things up. So we've found a lot of uses for these bulbs and have had zero complaints. I've had no issues connecting to wifi or setting up any of these lights, even the ones outside remain connected. One of my kids flips their switch on and off repeatedly, which resets the light but even that is as simple as reconnecting to the lights wifi signal, and the light will retain all of its settings once it's paired again. Initial setup is very easy, connect your phone to the light's wifi signal, select the type of bulb and it's good to go. The bulbs react instantly when changing a setting from the phone. The Tapo app is pretty easy to use, we also have it for our video doorbell and cameras outside, so all of the lights and cameras are on one app, and we're very happy with all of it now about a year in. We've also had temps down to -20F and up over 100F and the bulbs outside have had no trouble.

Horrible!!!
This is an absolute piece of crap, the absolute WORST smart bulb I have ever tried! Colors are ghastly, flickers/annoyingly changes brightness and color all the time (so bad I removed the light). This hideously awful light requires you sign up for a TP (toilet paper?) account just to simply use the damned thing only to find all of my Internet bandwidth being used up to send MY PERSONAL, PRIVATE INFO TO SERVERS IN CHINA! Why is it all of the Chinese products require you download a poorly written piece of crap app and give them all of your personal info to sign up for an account while all the smart stuff made in countries other than China and Taiwan NEVER do this! I have a smart bulb made in Japan and I never had to sign up for any accounts or download an app just to use. I now see why these are being sold so darned cheap as part of Amazon bundles. Probably no one will touch them otherwise and it's the only way for them to get rid of stock. My God this is an awful light, I just mean really, really horrific. If you care about your privacy and protecting the info on your phone, DO NOT GET THIS PRODUCT OR DOWNLOAD THEIR CRASH-HAPPY JUNKY SPYWARE. I really, really hope I can return this. As it is, Amazon makes you pay about $9 UPS fee just to return something and this cost just a few bucks more than that so it isn't really worth it to return, but I swear to God, I will NEVER, EVER, EVER BUY ANOTHER TP-LINK PRODUCT AGAIN! I don't know what happened to this company, they used to be decent, but over the last few years, their products have fallen off a cliff in terms of design, quality, and now these privacy hijacking requirements. I HATE, HATE, HATE TP-LINK AND THIS PRODUCT! COME ON, IT'S A LIGHTBULB, ONE SHOULDN'T NEED TO JUMP THROUGH ALL OF THESE HOOPS SIGNING UP FOR ACCOUNTS YOU ABSOLUTELY DO NOT WANT AND DOWNLOADING ONE OF THE MOST SERIOUSLY DYSFUNCTIONAL, POORLY WRITTEN PIECES OF CRAP-WARE SPYWARE I HAVE EVER SEEN! DOES THIS COMPANY REALLY NEED ALL OF MY LOGINS AND PASSWORDS? NO I DON'T THINK SO! TO HECK WITH IT, IF I HAVE TO PAY MORE THAN THE PRODUCT IS WORTH JUST TO SEND IT BACK, THEN THAT'S WHAT I AM DOING. OH YEAH, DID I MENTION HOW MUCH I HATE THIS PRODUCT?

Better than Kasa
These are similar to the old Kasa KL-130 bulb, but add several cool new features. For instance, there is now a "party mode" that can use your phone's microphone to make a light show with your bulbs, or the bulbs can just cycle between several colors on their own. They also updated the sunset and sunrise times to allow up to 5 hours before or after instead of only 59 minutes. You can set your lights to turn on or off up to 5 hours and 59 minutes before or after sunrise or sunset, so you have lot's of flexibility. The old KL-130 bulbs had an "away" mode, but they took it away when they made the switch to the Tapo app. The away mode is available from the main screen on these Tapo lights. When set to Away Mode, these lights will randomly turn on and off making it appear like you are home when you are away. The fade feature has also changed. The Kasa KL-130 can be set to fade up to 60 minutes. This Tapo light can only be set to fade up to 30 minutes. That being said, the 'fade' on the original light was stepped, so around every few seconds it would get brighter or dimmer and you would noticeably see it 'step'. The Tapo light does this much more smoothly. The pairing feature also seemed different to me although it's been a long time since I've set up the KL-130. I'm pretty sure those used Bluetooth for setup, and these use Wi-Fi instead, and that's where people are probably going to have the most trouble. During the pairing process, it will ask you to pair your phone with the light. If you have a phone like my Pixel 7, you will need to turn off your cellular network connection while doing this, or the phone won't pair to the light and setup will fail. They are also only 2.4Ghz, which can also cause people issues if they have newer phones. This is kind of a bad setup experience, but for me it was no big deal. That being said, I wouldn't buy these for someone else unless I was prepared to help them set them up. Overall, the light color and brightness is indistinguishable from the older KL-130 bulb to my eyes regardless of the color setting, so I'm not replacing all of my old bulbs just yet.

Tapo Smart Bulbs Lose Their Luster (and Connection)
As someone who's dived headfirst into the smart home world, I had high hopes for these Tapo TP-Link Smart Light Bulbs. They promise a lot on paper: 16 million colors, dimmable, Alexa/Google Home compatibility, no hub required – all the bells and whistles you'd want. And initially, they worked quite well. The setup was fairly straightforward, and it was great to be able to change colors and brightness with a voice command or tap of the app. However, the honeymoon phase with these bulbs was, unfortunately, short-lived for most of the ones I bought. I tried seven different bulbs from this pack, spreading them across various rooms in my house, and five of them eventually developed the same infuriating problem: they simply stopped connecting to Wi-Fi. It's not a matter of weak signal; these bulbs are within reasonable range of my 2.4GHz network. And once they decide to drop off, even factory resetting them seems to be a futile exercise. They just won't reconnect, leaving me with what are essentially overpriced, fancy-looking standard LED bulbs that flicker when you turn them on because they try to connect. It's incredibly frustrating when you invest in smart home tech for convenience, only to have it become a constant source of troubleshooting. When they work, they're great, offering good color accuracy and decent brightness. But the persistent connectivity issues make them unreliable for any long-term smart home setup. Pros: * Good range of colors and dimmability. * No hub required, which is a nice selling point for simplicity. * Easy initial setup when they do connect. Cons: * Major connectivity issues: A significant number of bulbs stopped connecting to Wi-Fi after a period of use. * Resetting often doesn't resolve the connection problems once they occur. * Rendered useless as smart bulbs, effectively becoming very expensive regular LED bulbs. Ultimately, while the features are appealing, the reliability simply isn't there. It's a shame, because when they work, they really add to the smart home experience. But a smart bulb that can't stay connected to your smart home isn't really a smart bulb at all. Buyer beware if you're looking for consistent performance. I use other tapo devices without issues.
