Another great voice for student choice!
I love this book. To be fair, I was pretty certain I was going to love it since I pre-ordered it after nErDCampMI where I was again inspired by the author. It did not disappoint. If you loved The Book Whisperer, this book is totally for you. Really connected with Disrupting Thinking? You'll love this book. I like that Pernille tells about the good and bad parts of getting to where she is now. That great teaching is a thing we can all achieve if we can keep the big picture in mind. I've definitely got my 5% improvement ready to go. Teaching book shopping, owning the practice of book abandonment, and choice - but intentional choice. "We are helping children become adults who will read". All the ideas in the book are teacher friendly, but it belongs in an admin book group as well. I think the lessons about growing passionate readers can be applied to any grade where kids read - though I wish all middle schools would take this book on. Just to start some conversations, change some trajectories. So, yes, I really think its worth your time.

Fantastic Book for Book Study and Collaboration!
Pernille Ripp knows students because she asks for feedback and the listens to it. Her students help her create the best authentic classroom for them to learn in. Passionate Readers lets us all benefit from her questions. We clearly hear what works for students and how to create classes where students are engaged readers. The book is broken into very manageable pieces, which will let me come back as I need to throughout the year. As I set up my library this summer, I thought about Mrs. Ripp's suggestions. I want my students to be invested in their library, I want them to be excited about the books that we have and to help me find the next great book. I want my students to know that they can be readers, even if they aren't right now, and this book will help me with that message.Passionate Readers will be THE book for educators around the country to have great conversations about. I want my colleagues to read this and for us to all work toward making this the best year for the students who are in our classrooms. They get this year and we get the opportunity to make it a great one. Passionate Readers will help us do just that.

Price
I found this book through my public library's OverDrive account and listened to the audio version; it did not have an ebook version. I absolutely love the content. Pernille Ripp has many ways to for teachers to motivate students to read. I loved it so much, I wanted my own physical copy for annotating and reference. After seeing the price, though, which was about $30 at the time of purchase, I cringed, it took about a week to persuade myself that it was worth the money, but I finally ordered it. I was very disappointed in the fact that after paying that amount, an index is not even included with the book. An index is important for academic reasons. A very simple table of contents is at the beginning, but that is it. Also, while very forgivable, and I usually overlook them, I will add that there are small typos throughout here and there where words mistakenly do not have spaces in between them.I have read Donalyn Miller's book, The Book Whisperer, and that was less expensive, it's longer, and includes an index. I mention this, because the content is comparably the same, and she wrote the forward.Again, content, YES, price compared to function, NO.

Bunches of easy and genuine ideas and tweaks to implement into your ...
This is without a doubt the most important professional I’ve read in my 21 years of teaching. I am a champion for so much of what Ripp writes of- and thought I was maximizing authentic literacy with my students. I was wrong. Bunches of easy and genuine ideas and tweaks to implement into your program that will help your students own who they are as readers. I took the leap and completely redid my library as Ripp recommended and it’s been a tremendous hit!

Great reading for any teacher or literacy coach
After participating in The Global Read Aloud, I've been following Pernille wherever she goes. This was a great read, with a lot of important information and tools, some of which I've already been doing in my classroom, which validated me, and others which I can't wait to implement in the new school year. This is a must-read for any reading/ELA teacher or literacy coach, but especially so for those at the secondary level.

A wonderful, practical read
Devoured this book as soon as I got it! Pernille's writing is always so truthful and usable. Unlike many professional development books, this book doesn't pretend that just following the program will bring you success and sunshine and rainbows 100% of the time. Pernille writes honestly about what her classroom looks like, mistakes she has made, and the changes that made a difference for her students. I finished this book feeling so comforted by the image she paints of her classroom. I felt like the amazing things she has accomplished are a possibility in my classroom, too, not just an idealistic pipe dream.

📚💜📚💜📚
I have devoured over 40 books so far this summer, but it took me almost two months to get through Passionate Readers - because it was that good. I had to stop and chew on one idea or strategy for a few days (formulating plans for how I would use that idea to make my classroom and instruction better) before I could move on.I truly feel like I have found a kindred spirit in Pernille Ripp and I encourage anyone and everyone who teaches reading to read this.

Incredible asset to ANY teacher's repertoire
This book is nothing short of a game changer. I thought I was emphasizing the importance, value, and fun of reading, but Pernille Ripp helped me see better ways of doing so. This book is all about choice reading and giving kids time to read books that THEY want to read to help them become reading identities. It's embarrassing how long it took me to link students' choice reading and improving in reading but I'm grateful that Mrs. Ripp helped me get there. EVERY TEACHER should read this and find ways to work this knowledge into their classrooms.

GRAT BOOK FROM A TEACHER THAT LOVES READING.
I have very much enjoyed this book as a teacher that works with young readers the common sense advice on how to set up a classroom as a reading community is so much more authentic as it comes from a teacher. Pernille has provided a template for others that can be adjusted to fit time constraints if needed. It gives us an ideal to work towards and provides great advice from her own students. I would say all teachers could benefit from these words. If I was a Principal or Superintendent I would include it in a new hire package to get teachers started on the right foot. Great text, highly recommend.

Inspiring Professional Book
Pernille Ripp speaks to my heart, as an educator, librarian, parent, and passionate reader. Her book isn't a how-to manual, but a book to inspire educators to bring out the best in our students as readers. Filled with guiding questions to help you reflect and potentially shift your teaching practices, this is a gem of a professional book. I highly recommend this to all educators, especially those teaching grades 3 and up.
