SHOULD MEINDLS EVER DO THIS?
I got a pair of Meindl’s for hunting several years ago. Up to last year, they were fine. As you can see in the photos, the uppers look as good as new. In fact, I’m pretty sure those are the original laces.One day last winter, we got a bit of snow, so I put them on for a short trip to the store. While driving, I noticed something weird was happening to the right one. So I pulled over to have a better look. The right sole had partly separated from the upper. Well, I couldn’t shop with the heel flopping about, so I got back in the car and drove home.By the time I got there, both soles were coming off and there was black gunk stuck all over the driver’s carpet in my car. Upon further investigation, I discovered that the elastomer in the welt and the material sandwiched between sole and upper had decomposed. It had lost its elasticity and become something akin to uncured rubber. Now, a fingernail will permanently dent it.What I find really disconcerting about this is that it happened without any warning. It could just as easily have happened 10 miles into a week-long backpacking trek in the Rockies. Then what??
