Huck Out West: A Novel

I was turned on to Coover's latest book by a stellar review in the New York Times. I hadn't thought about Huck Finn since I was a kid, now I was eating it up and laughing all the way from beginning to end. Coover has a way with dialog and he clearly captured the essence of Twain's characters in their grown up incarnations. This was one of those books I didn't want to end and is the best book I've read all year and likely to be in my Top 10 list at year's end.

Be sure to read Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn adventures before reading this story. It will make much more sense of this narrative. Mr. Coover is a fine story teller and has provided an enjoyable literary experience.

Interesting book, sometimes hard to follow but on a whole a good read. The idea of Huckleberry Finn lived on in a free and wonderful way.

I thoroughly enjoyed Huck Out West. Coover does an excellent job at finding his inner Twain and giving an adult voice to HUckleberry Finn. Coovers voice as Huck is more mature and hardened he pushes HUck through the American west and he's around to witness both bleak and amazing moments in the history of the west. Huck Out West is like visiting an old friend that you haven't seen in a long time, they are still thsame lovable character but the world has changed them, so it is with Huck Finn. Loved this book.

Enjoyable at first, but the covers are too far apart. I normally read novels right down to the last page, but after 100 pages, I was wondering why. Now, having finished the book, I admit it had its pleasant moments, but the labored style made it hard going for me at times. It was like having a joke repeated long after it has made its point. I gave it 2 stars. OK, I'll stretch it: Two & a half.

Huckleberry Finn is, of course, the iconic American nival. Coover had carried on with Hucks life, including Tom Sawyer and Jim as characters. He seems to me to capture Huck perfectly, ignorant, idealistic, sensible. The book is funny, absurd, and profound.

just couldn't get into this book. To me there are many better books written in this style like Little Big Man. Maybe it's me , but it didn't seem to justify the accolades in the reviews.
