Widescreen/Blu-ray. PG 13. Clear and Present Danger is a 1994 film directed by Phillip Noyce, based on the book of the same name by Tom Clancy. As in the novel, Jack Ryan is appointed Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Acting Deputy Director and discovers that he is being kept in the dark by colleagues who are conducting a covert war against drug lords in Colombia.

Well Done Film...
Doesn't hold up too well over time (comparing to Amazon Jack Ryan show), but still well done and better than Patriot Games...enjoy!

Best adaptation of a Clancy novel Focuses on govt cover up
Out of all the movie adaptations of Tom Clancy’s novels this is my favorite. It’s different from many of his other stories because it points out the corruption in government.A friend of the president (Donald Moffat) is killed by Colombian drug cartels and he wants strong action. That leads the National Security Adviser James Cutter (Harris Yulin) and Deputy Director of the CIA Bob Ritter (Henry Czerny) to devise a plan to take out the drug lords and their operations using a ground team led by covert operator John Clark (Willem Dafoe). Things quickly escalate, people die, Cutter and Ritter try to cover things up, and Deputy CIA Director Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) has to figure it all out.Like the best of Clancy’s work the movie includes espionage, intrigue, double crosses, and action. It also has fantasy because while Ryan starts off doing his investigation going through phone intercepts, computer data, books, etc. he eventually goes to Colombia on his own and gets involved in the action. High level CIA officers like Ryan are bureaucrats who stay in the office. Of course that wouldn’t make a good story for a main character so Clancy and the movie has to get him involved out in the field. It also gets a bit ridiculous as Ryan passes out his business card that says CIA on it in Colombia and everyone believes him.C

Ford continues an excellent franchise
Having liked this franchise since it’s beginning (Alec Baldwin as Jack Ryan in Hunt for Red October), it was great when Ford took over. Not that Baldwin was not a great Jack - he was - but the next two films are equally outstanding. Same franchise, but new Jack, yet somehow they all hit a high bar. While my wife prefers the previous, Patriot Games, my favorite of the two is Clear and Present Danger (4K UHD). When Amazon had a deal on it, we grabbed them both for our streaming library. I just completed Clear and Present Danger and once again, loved it. Ford as Ryan has a maturity to him. He’s settled, more settled into his life back at CIA, and with his boss (played by James Earl Jones) there to turn to, Ryan is great at taking on the bad guys. Unfortunately for him, this film sees the bad guys all around him in Washington DC and his boss eventually.... well, you’ll have to watch to find out. Ford takes it on and comes away with the save for the win. But not before a few trips to South America and run ins with the President, his staff, and a major drug cartel. The action is high, his family supports him (though not on the front lines of this fight), and Ryan of course gets into trouble being shot at. In the end, this Ryan is a great film.

Attention U.S. Politicians: Never Leave One Single Soldier Behind.
I saw this in the theater back when it came out in the mid-90s. While I was in high school back then, this movie still remains among my top 3 favorite movies of all time.I don't know of a more-realistic action movie not based on a true story. This movie is expansive. The acting is superb, most notibly by Harrison Ford, James Earl Jones, and Miguel Sandoval. The diverse selection of scenes was excellent, as was the filming of the action scenes.I liked the many inclusions of realistic aspects of the U.S. military. The conversations in every scene are like what you'd expect in everyday life, very realistic touches there. This isn't the standard Hollywood movie fare filled with cliche statements and dialog different than that in anything other than entertainment; this film is instead a very-realistic, energetic, suspenseful, and beautifully-filmed portrayal of consequenses that can and do occur all too often to members of our armed forces when politicians don't listen to them and try to run wars and military operations from their air-conditioned offices back home.If you find the themes of this movie insightful, then I very strongly recommend you also check out the nonfiction book, "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man". I seriously doubt that most Americans are aware of the past political/military operations described in that book, e.g. the type depicted in this movie. It's critically important that every American know that U.S. operations like these have not only occurred, and unfortunately still do occur, but that they also have done so with significantly more frequency than you realized. For the protections of our troops, and for the protection of innocent foreign civilians caught in the crossfire, it is important that as many Americans as possible become more deeply versed in international affairs, so that we can be knowledgeable enough to hold our elected leaders accountable when they attempt to send ANY number of American troops, no matter how small the quantity of individuals, into harm's way. A soldier should never be considered expendible.

Acceptable Blu-ray for Clear and Present Danger
The film itself is great - the type of film that rarely gets made any more, with a steady pace, a sprinkling of action, and some good characters. The video transfer is a bit problematic. Generally it's acceptable and fairly good quality. However I was aware before purchasing that there'd be some DNR done on this film. It's true. At some points faces go slightly 'waxy', meaning stubble and other fine facial details disappear. It's not excessive but it's worth bearing in mind. The sound is very strong. There are some extras, including a 'making of' with some discussion of novel elements to the film for the time - such as the inclusion of computer hacking, which apparently hadn't really be done in film up to this point. All in all, an acceptable Blu-ray release so long as you go in knowing there's been a bit of fiddling with the image.

Clear And Present Danger, 2003 Special Collector's Edition - Clear and present entertainment!
In the third of the Jack Ryan films, Harrison Ford reprises the role of Ryan, portraying the many facets of the character with consummate ease. He's moved onwards and upwards since the events of `Patriot Games', now a high ranking member of the CIA, giving briefings to the President. The murder of a friend of the President leads to a link with a Columbian drugs cartel. A chain of events is set in motion to avenge the murder, and Ryan is caught in the middle, in the role of innocent patsy. He must uncover the truth and act to not only save his own career, but to save the lives of some patriots and to expose sickening corruption in the heart of Government. With a strong central performance from Ford, and Willem Dafoe as the straight dealing Clarke, lots of big action set pieces and a well directed and tense search for the truth, this is an entertaining 2 hours and a highly recommended film. This edition presents the film in its proper widescreen, with a really good 5.1 surround sound. There is also a DTS soundtrack, which sounds really good. There is a decent set of extras, all in all this is a package well worth getting.

"Your word is who you are" - as topical today as it ever was!
How can this movie be 25 years old? It looks totally fresh and of course real warships, choppers and the like don't age half as badly as their more recent CGI equivalents. But leaving all the action and intelligence tradecraft aside, this is a story about the White House and what happens when politicians start breaking the law. Everybody in Washington (and other capitals around the world) should be forced to watch James Earl Jones as Admiral Greer telling Jack Ryan: "You took an oath... and I don't mean to the President: you gave your word to his boss, you gave your word to the people of the United States."

OK, but...
The novel was one of Tom Clancy's better efforts. The film takes extreme liberties with it, retaining the characters, but often inverting story lines, which eventually leads to a rather bizarre and somewhat ridiculous end. Walking up to a drug lord's door and knocking? Come on! The film highlight is the Colombia ambush action scene, quite different from the one in the book, but very well done. And the theme of Dirty Deeds in High Places, and the willingness to sacrifice good men on the altar of political expediency is retained. A lot of that seems to go on.So, entertaining, but not so much as it could have been.

Watch your back, Jack
CIA agent Jack Ryan returns as he gets caught up in a CIA cover up after a botched assassination attempt on a Columbian drug baron after he orders the murder of a friend of the President of the United States. The 3rd entry in one of America's answer to James Bond franchise sees Harrison Ford return to the role after Patriot Games and is a tense, gripping film with good performances from Ford and the cast. James Earl Jones returns for a 3rd and final time as Ryan's boss and mentor Admiral Greer, this franchise's version of M. Picture and sound quality on the bluray is fantastic.
