Best Hardware value on the block! Loads of options. VERY FLEXABLE!!!!! This Baby Rocks. 2022 Model
This was not my first NAS i upgraded from Synology 418play A 4 Bay NAS. I am not a professional but a retired golfer (patients is a virtue). 1st off, spend the extra $70 and get the 6 bay it's a no-brainer. There's a tons of U-Tube videos to get you started. Buy cheap m.2 SSD's for the m.2 slots, as the buss speed is X1 - 1000MB/s. HDD run at 250MB/s (4Xslower) The OS lets you configure almost everything your way, many many options - not a bad thing. I installed all apps (including PLEX) on one of the m.2 ssd 500GB and Qtiering works great as the OS system was installed on the same M.2 SSD. I had two old SSD's laying around from old computers one 240gb the other 250gb installed in Bay 5&6 configured as Raid 1 read/write HDD Caching for a 3 drive RAID5 on Bay 1,2,3. This baby is fast. No hiccups. caching hits are in the 70% range. Easily handles everything I throw at it. Setup is tedious to get it exactly the way you want it. but well worth it. Quality is top-notch.The not so good: Had trouble setting up Qumagie to work with two phones & two computers. Don't really know if it was me or if Qnap was having issues with their servers. I think they added another layer of security because during setup I had to login with my Qnap account AND my qnap user name and password, confusing at first.Everything works great now. All 4 devices now are in sync. I have 38000 photo's using 3,2,1 backup strategy. QuMagie is wonderful. One-touch copy backup/transfer is a gem done right. This function alone can-not be over stated. A god-sent for avid photographers. PLEX runs flawlessly. Photos, Music, 4K videos, and home movies run without issues on all devices. Accessing This NAS off-site is a breeze including all mobile apps. (note the one-time double login account setup requirements) our phone pics auto upload to the NAS and when I get home they auto-sync to my desktop master Photo directory ready for my edits....... Would I buy it again at seven hundred for a 6-bay, up-to-the-minute latest Intel hardware, you bet! The learning curve is steep but well worth the climb. That is if you want best-in-class.Oh by the way, You can double the MEM to 8GB Dual Chanel by adding just ONE 4GB MEM to the existing 4GB for ten dollars available on Amazon as Samsung 4GB DDR4 PC4-21300, 2666MHZ, 260 PIN SODIMM, 1.2V, CL 19. my MEM cache jumped to 3.12GB with 4.86 available. Seems to play very nice with the installed ADATA SODIMM.With all 20 apps and the system installed on a single M.2 Drive, requires just 75GB. And with the NAS running at near no load and 8GB of MEM installed it will leave about 5GB of MEM free for System use. So 8GB is a lot of MEM for home use. I've seen the QNAP use the extra MEM for internal system caching when needed.

A very niche little powerhouse.
Sometimes there are items that come across the PC world that are worth exploring. This is a strange little NAS that can handle a fair amount of RAM, add SSD for caching and hold 3 drives. It also comes with 2.5 gig ethernet port and faster USB connections. 3 drives is sufficient to make the most basic RAID 5, JBOD , 0, 1+spare) choices. I have opted for a single drive that will be expanded to RAID 5 as I get more drives. The unit itself is simple to open up and to access the drive bays that are somewhat "carrierless." I was able to pop the drive in without issue. While open, I was able to see where RAM resides and the potential M.2 SSD points were. There are. couple of cons to this system but they really are not problems. The build of this system is a bit on the light side. I would have preferred a more sturdy unit but, it is does its job given that NAS is ideally stationary. Given that there is no ability to add PCI, it would have been nice to have two ethernet ports. As there are a couple of faster USB, one could be potentially converted to another ethernet port.Set up for this unit was fairly straight forward and QNAP's interface is easy to navigate if one is somewhat familiar with NAS or PC under the hood. For beginners, I recommend looking at some Youtube on set up of such a NAS as it may save you time and potential headaches. With a single IronWolf Pro 16 terabyte drive in the unit, I spent several hours and copied approximately 8 terabyte to the NAS. USB to USB 3.0 external drive (2.5 drive) gave speeds from 90-120 which was to be expected. Testing with WiFi gave similar results as the router was able to use the 2.5 gig port having one itself. The bottleneck was both the WiFi and drive being used to upload. This was more than acceptable.Direct SSD drive to NAS USB maintained similar speeds on the high side that too was to be expected. - After all, this is just one drive in the unit. The goal was to simply see how all the ports perform with minimal set up.Within a few weeks I expect to put in the other drives, add to the RAM and possibly employ a couple of M.2 SSD mirroring each other for a cache. The NAS is fully capable of handling HDMI out but I am not interested in that feature as I use other hardware for media playback. My short take - this is a fully capable little NAS that can house very large drives and enjoy the benefits of a fair amount of RAM (16 gigs) and M.2 SSD caching. The case is somewhat small and visually less industrial looking than typical NAS with front bays exposed. It can sit nicely in an entertainment area or on a larger desk or shelf. Media file store and playback, useful for PC/Mac backups, Time Machine are all typical and easily doable with this unit. For the moment, it will be more closely assigned to my computer and an Nvidia Shield TV Pro for entertainment purposes. So far, I find this little jewel easy to recommend if the "cons" are not a bother to you as they are not to me.

Smooth and productive
It is a great NAS, I mainly use it to share my media library (consisting of more than thousand movies and two times more TV series) with my close friends around the world. Besides, it is a great help to organize my personal files; especially when it comes to reach out to these files remotely. If I may humbly recommend:- Use the screws that come in the box to fix the HDDs to their plastic shafts. This would eliminate the noise of the HDDs drastically.- Upgrade the RAM; thus you can have the device do more with less effort. I have upgraded mine with 32 GB RAM (2x16GB So DIMM DDR4 2666MHz). And it works smoothly. Having said that, QNAP officially recommends the max RAM capacity to be 16GB. So do your own due diligence. Finally, I wouldn't go with the 3200MHz RAMs as they have a higher CLL and generate some complications.

Far Better Than Synology DS920+
I use to love my Synology DS920+ but the slow file transfers made me fall out of love with it. I purchased the QNAP Turbo NAS TS-464-4G because of the 2.5gb ethernet connections. My file transfers have gone from 112mbs to 265mbs, sustained, over CAT 6a cable. The Synology has better software but the Qnap has better hardware, hands down. As a home user I need the Qnap hardware more than the slightly better Synology software. I only wish I had not waited so long to buy the Qnap.
