Excellent for the money and versatile for many uses.
I'm giving this 5 stars based on what I got vs what I Paid ($299). It solved two LARGE problems at once. First, it works very well to practice at low volumes with my band without setting up a PA. Secondly, works outstandingly well for recording when plugged in direct. More on that later. It some ways it met expectations and in other ways it exceed my expectations. First, here are some of the areas where it is only "okay".First of all, the sensitivity of the pads is a bit lacking. It won't pick up really fast strikes, such as a fairly fast double role or even quick flam. But having said that, it works well enough for just about everything I need to do with it.The dynamic range is not as good as I would like. The difference in volume between a very soft strike and a very hard strike definitely noticeable but not as great as I would like. But hey, it's $299 electronic drums. The sound directly from the built in speakers is pretty good, but again, not great. But again, $299 drums.Where they shine is plugged in directly for recording. I use them on my home recordings and the recorded sound direct is outstanding. I'm 100% sure I could not mic my drums and get a better sound. In a pro studio probably, but not in my home studio. The pedals are good but for putting down a basic beat they are lacking for any fast base drum work. But... what IS great is I can replace the base drum pad with the base drum trigger from my Roland set. With that I can use a real BD pedal which works perfectly for quick double strikes. I don't think you can do that with any of the other cheap electronic pads because their base drum pads are just switches. For my needs, this was WELL worth the price and I am very happy with them. Your milage may vary.

Good for beginners; pedals are trash
If you have any experience as a drummer and are looking for a semi-decent electronic kit for the casual/intermediate drummer, this is not it. I love all things Yamaha, and the sound on this kit isn’t bad, it has a TON of features and customization options, and a very small footprint. That said, the pedals are complete trash to the point that the kit is unplayable (in my opinion). I looked at upgrade options for the pedals but they are about $75 - $100 each, bringing the total kit price to $500+. I was so excited when this arrived, and so disappointed when I actually sat down to play it. I’m not knocking Yamaha, great company, good sound on this product, but it’s essentially a toy. My 10 and 13 year olds LOVE it. As does my wife.I’m going to return this and buy an electronic kit better suited for my needs for the same price it would cost to upgrade this to my satisfaction.Still a Yamaha fan!

Awesome for learning drums
Sounds from the in-built speakers are not great but once it is plugged to big speakers and woofer, it sounds very realistic to actual drums. It is very solid, strong and great for learning and playing live music. I enjoy it a lot. My 3 yr kid too enjoys it playing and practicing.

Fun for nOObs, better for professionals
So...If you are such a beginner at music/drums that you cannot tell that this machine sounds horrible, than buy it, enjoy it, learn on it, and have a great time, using this as a stepping stone to nicer kit as you progress. Then, on the other hand, if you are a semi-pro producer/song writer, and need a controller to actuate your beautiful NI Abby Road drums or slate drums etc, and do not want to shell out $1000 for a nice Roland kit, then THIS is perfect.Using the MIDI output, I can tweak this machine, plus settings in Kontakt, to get the play-ability of my favorite drum sets perfect, and fun. It can do buzzes and rolls as well! but again, if you want flawless playing, you'll need to get actual nice roland mesh heads, etc.but for me, I needed the cheapest solution to simply trigger my VST drums. And this is it. It is "good enough" and that' all I wanted, no more, no less.I used to play on my keyboard, but this is SO MUCH better, and I only spent minimal dollars. Plus, I need to experiment with electric drums in a new performance venue I'm in charge of, and again, I didn't wanna shell out tons of cash to experiment...but this is a perfect cheap way to explore what electric drums might mean for us in different venues.
