Can I use this product on bread?

I'm afraid you're probably out of luck. bread disbanded in 1997 - and even had they not, it's well known in showbiz circles that they far preferred to be sprayed with a primer prior to the lacquer coat. David Gates though is known to favour Plasti - Kote over Hycote (after the primer).

Is this product suitable for protecting a vintage brass coffee table I have restored?

By 'protecting' I presume you are wanting to stop the brass from tarnishing? Lacquers can reduce oxidisation, but over time it seems to still occur with some metals. You then could have the problem of dull brass underneath a lacquer finish and you won't be able to polish up the brass to restore the gleam. Also, if you decide you don't like the appearance you could have a devil of a job removing the lacquer from any recesses and fine detail etc - and this would involve the use of toxic substances such as paint thinners or similar. I wouldn't lacquer brass myself (and it will look strange and not traditional at all).If you really wanted to do this, I can't recommend Hycote lacquer as it is so slow to dry (my guitar body still has not dried properly). You could try cellulose clear lacquer - try automotive paint suppliers who will make you up an aerosol can. Only apply a thin coat (shiny metals look very strange underneath a thick coat).
