Tomb of Dracula: The Complete Collection Vol. 1 (Tomb of Dracula (1972-1979))
S**!
Dracula rises!
Stunning full colour reproduction of the Marvel comics of the early seventies. I read these as a teenager and loved the artwork and the stories. Really looking forward to reading them again and, maybe, seeing things from a different perspective. Also included are reproductions of the front covers.Surprised to find that the comic 'Dracula Lives!' is included (these are in black and white) - I don't remember these, but they look great. Not sure if a volume 2 is being released, but based on this volume, if it is I will definitely be buying it.

No longer just ‘Essential,’ now hopefully definitive...
I owned all of these in the budget Essential line a few years ago, but they were obviously black-and-white reprints on lower quality paper. Saying that, I grew up on UK Marvel reprints so the lack of colour was no issue. Indeed, the comics captured something of the feel of Universal’s horror cycle. However, the colour versions are a revelation. This is now the ‘Hammer’ version in all its lurid, sexy glory. I can’t wait to see how they handle later stories. It’s interesting how they’re handling the choice of issues this time. The Essentials collection pretty much followed the main comics’ regular order, inserting the occasional Giant Size Chiller or Werewolf by Night crossover. There were references to the parallel Dracula Lives magazine left in the collections, but these magazine stories were held over until the disjointed fourth Essentials volume, which resulted in a rather peculiar final book, where the stories all just stopped, leaving a lot of plot threads dangling. Sadly, there were no further Essential volumes, meaning the later adventures of Hannibal King, Frank Drake, Rachel Van Helsing, Blade and Taj Nital in the Nightstalkers, Doctor Strange, the X-Men and later Tomb of Dracula miniseries went uncollected. Hopefully, given the concurrent Dracula Lives stories are included in this volume, we’ll get the whole storyline up to the present day. Also, this time, hopefully we’ll get uncensored artwork. I haven’t noticed any ‘cover-ups’ yet...As for the series itself, it’s just brilliant. The comicbook starts out cheesily, but once Marv Wolfman becomes the lead writer, the storytelling sky rockets in quality. It’s a mix of Universal and Hammer with a dash of ‘gee whiz.’ Even better, the economy of scripting and the superb artwork mean there are terrific stories told in single issues, which is such a change from so much comicbook storytelling these days, where it seems to take five issues to tell a story they could tell in one issue in the 1970s. As the series moves along, I can’t help but think that Joss Whedon must have read these comics, because there are numerous parallels to his vampire shows, which often seem like ‘junior’ versions of Tomb of Dracula.Regardless, this is a must-buy for anyone who loves 1970s horror. Now Marvel has the film rights to Blade back, they could do worse than adapt these comics for television...
