Fun and entertaining—great for kids
I put this on for the kids, and they really enjoyed it. What I liked: • Kid-friendly: Bright, colorful, and easy for kids to follow • Entertaining characters: Keeps their attention the whole time • Good for family movie time: Light and fun without being too intense Things to consider: • More geared toward younger kids than adults • Not a super deep storyline, but that’s expected Overall: If you’re looking for something fun and easy for kids to watch, this is a good choice. It kept them entertained, which is always a win!

I'm an adult FYI so this is an adult perspective review
No one did not rent this for a child. I have no kids. I rented this because I'm basically a child and enjoy some thought free movies. Aka movies that don't make me think about all the stresses in life and are simple clean cute entertainment. Ultimately this did make me think though. It made me think about how badly the analogy this movie represents is. It made me think how it was possible for the main character to know what emotions he wanted to convey and how anyone would have the confidence to send a glitchy emoji that has what appear to be sporadic changes in expression. How could he possibly know the expressions he chose would be representative of his feelings. I mean seriously what if it flipped the bird? How did the emojis even really know how he felt all they found was one deleted email. How can they view the outside world yet not remember anything that happened that they witnessed? Why are the apps they're in making noise yet aren't activated? Why doesn't he just turn his phone off? What happens if he turns his phone off? Do new versions of the app characters get created every time he downloads an app he's deleted? And shouldn't his phone be bricked from pulling the plug mid erase? And why do they call it erase and not reset? Is that because they don't think little kids can understand the word reset? Then why is every thing else in this movie overly complicated? So you want to teach kids a lesson in a story that being different isn't bad while simultaneously teaching them that the only way to fix a problem is to erase it? Now I know why my mom didn't want us watching so many different children's shows. They dumb down concepts and yeah your kids that partial accuracy and explanation is perfectly fine as long as you finish and that there are no real consequences to your actions. This movie hurt my brain. Plus side, if you're a mindless child or a mindless parent and don't think about anything you observe then this movie is cute and entertaining.

My kids love this movie
The Emoji Movie, released in 2017, is a colorful and visually appealing animated film that attempts to explore the world inside our smartphones. While it may have entertained a younger audience, it received mixed reviews from both critics and viewers. The film's concept is creative, taking us into the digital world of emojis, and it has its moments of humor and charm. The voice cast, including T.J. Miller and James Corden, does a commendable job in bringing these digital characters to life. However, where the Emoji Movie falls short is in its story and execution. The plot feels somewhat formulaic and lacks the depth and originality that would make it truly engaging for a broad audience. Some of the humor may be more appealing to kids, but it often misses the mark with adult viewers. Ultimately, the Emoji Movie is a visually vibrant film with an interesting concept but doesn't quite reach its full potential in terms of storytelling and overall appeal. It's decent entertainment for children, but it may leave older viewers wanting more.

Mildly amusing
I vaguely recall this was widely panned, critically and in ticket sales, when it was released. So with that kind of expectation going in, and I was happy to find that it's actually a pretty decent movie. It does tries a tad too hard on some of the emoji jokes, such that some fall flat, but there are plenty which do land. I would have given it four stars - being what the movie itself is worth - but for the very mediocre UHD blu-ray quality. 3D animated movies - when mastered well - are exemplars for UHD blu-rays. This one is not done well. There's no Dolby Vision support, so you're stuck with 10-bit colour, and posterisation is rampant. This is particularly problematic when the main character is a yellow sphere - rendered uglified with bands of flat yellow shades, rather than smooth gradients.

Fun for the whole family
Whether you are a kid and are just looking for a simple story line with some colourful characters and exciting singing and dancing, or an adult who appreciates clever humour, The Emoji Movie is the movie for you. I have watched the movie 4 times now and everytime I watch it I notice new parts and discover new jokes that I had missed before because I was laughing too hard. The movie is one gigantic advertisement but the writers know this and make many references to how stupid internet phenomenons and social media has become. This is summed up by a line at the end where Addie tells Alex that she "likes a boy that can express his emotions" after he has just sent her a "super emoji". The amazing characters of Mel Meh and Mary Meh speaking in monotone voices throughout the whole movie made a great subplot which gave the film an extra layer of humour. If all this wasn't enough, Sir Patrick Stewart voices the poo emoji and makes more puns than I can count. To hear some of the best and worst puns of your life you have to watch the movie, and buy the DVD because I guarantee you'll want to watch it more than once.
