Can any buyers of ‘caged’ feeders’ tell me how long it took for the birds to get used to it?

Some birds don't like it at all. Most though; tits, finches, etc get used to it after a fairly short time - a week or so perhaps. Many others will feed under it from dropped pieces e.g. robins, chaffinches, blackbirds and thrushes. Of course sparrows will feed on anything and seem to have no fear at all. Other birds like starlings will feed and it does slow them a little because they can be greedy bullies and tend to hog the feeders in small flocks to the detriment of smaller birds.

No, it only takes the fat balls. You'll need something with a finer mesh for seed. My one started rusting after 3 weeks.

Is the lid of the fat snax feeder secure enough if it were to fall onto the ground?

Hi , Yes it is secure enough ! The lid would not fall off I have this feeder and its brilliant for the little birds to enjoy the suet fat balls in peace

is this feeder all metal, is there any plastic that squirrels can chew through to get at the food?

No plastic on this - so no squirrels can get in. Only small birds can use it (mostly sparrows, tits, finches and nuthatches). Starlings will try real hard but can’t get in. I have a suet ball feeder without the outer cage for the larger birds (again, no plastic).
