It works when air hits it, so when you open the wrapper the hand warmer starts heating, they last for well over 10 hours when hot, they're amazing!

No, once the 8 hours are up they loose the heat.

Q: Are these foot warmers the same as the hand warmers?

Possibly a different shape but they do the same thing. I do know the foot warmers advise not to be directly against the skin however I did put them inside my socks to hold them in place and was fine, but the soles of your feet are probably tougher than the palms of your hands so be careful if you do try. Might be better getting hand warmers just in case.
