Good late Beachboys
Prefer the Holland section but Carl and the Passions look well worth a few listens

2 x classic albums & extras!
I have the 70's original vinyl and later cd's but this was a must have purchase with all the bonus material!

A bit of a disappointment
This two disc set is OK but nothing more. I found it flat and lifeless. I much prefer their earlier stuff. I bought the 5 disc version of Feel Flows and it is much, much better imho. But I am still pleased I bought it. I love the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson, but this is only average compared to their other offerings.

The Beach Boys get their second (Santa Ana) Wind
Starting with the bonus material, not as generous as “Feel Flows”, the highlights for me are Dennis Wilson’s power ballad “Carry me Home” (which curiously Primal Scream covered on their “Dixie Narco” ep, all be it as a woozy, chilled dance track). “The Road not taken” is the early folk version of “All is that”. “We got love” & “Hard time” are strong Fataar/Chaplin rockers, with a little help from Mike. It’s always interesting to hear Beach Boy songs without musical instruments, which is feature hear with a-Cappella versions of “Marcella” & “All this is that”.There are also some great live songs, but always a little frustrating not to have the entire show.As for the two studio albums, I’ve always felt that “Carl &..” was the new bands dynamic getting to know each other. There as some good songs on the album, in partial “Marcella” & “You need to stand..”. “Here She comes” & “Hold on Dear Brother” are solid Fataar/Chaplin tracks, in the vain of The Band. The two Dennis Wilson ballads “Make it good” & “Cuddle up” are nice songs, if a little over produced (the alternative mixes are stripped down, giving the songs a more focused feel).Whereas with the “Holland” album, the band nails it, with no weak tracks. There is sunshine, with “Sail on Sailor” & “California Saga – California” & adult-orientated rock with “Trader” & “Funky Pretty”, another strong Dennis Ballad with "Only with you" & even the naff “The beaks of Eagles” is still quite endearing. There is an instrumental version of “Mountvernon” on the “The Good Vibrations” Box set, without the bizarre voice-over it sounds like something off "Smile", it's just a shame it couldn't have fitted on this new release. So not quite an essential purchase as “Feel Flow”, but if you, like me love this period of the Beach Boys career, I would still get it.Next in line for release should be “15 Big ones” & “The Beach Boys love you”, which is going to be fun.
