Sleuth: The Amazing Quest for Lost Art Treasures

Inside story of Fake and Fortune
This description of art dealing and 'sleeper' pictures' found in various places is fascinating and well worth reading. A Rembrandt thought to be by a pupil turns out to be the real thing. A Rockwell hung in the definitive museum is a fake. Mould comes across pictures he hopes will be worth a lot of money if he can find who painted them. It is fascinating and tells the story of one of the presenters of Fake or Fortune. It Is very well written and I would recommend it to anybody interested in art, art history and detective stories.

Great Read!
I am a big fan of Philip Mould after watching the Fake or Fortune series on BBC. The book doesn't disappoint. It's written in a flowery flamboyant style that describes each incident wonderfully. It's just what I would have expected from an educated intelligent man.His exploits in chasing down paintings give a great insight to the world of art dealing.I recommend it highly!

Simply a good read in its own right.
This interesting book is written essentially for the ordinary reader; anecdotal and without condescension to those readers unversed in the esoteric nature of art dealing. As in his choice of title the author broadly equates his experiences as an art dealer with that of running a Christopher Marlow like detective agency, frequently following often barely tangible clues to potentially valuable art works; this sometimes involves strange and exciting encounters with peculiar, eccentric collectors and fellow dealers before achieving ultimate success. Although now an established expert in his specialised field there is nothing precious about Philip Mould's writing, making it accessible to anyone interested in a good narrative simply for itself.

Very interesting and enjoyable
Thoroughly enjoyed it as far as I got before being interrupted by more urgent reading. An interesting mix of technical issues, vignettes of the often strange characters that populate the art world and observations on how the art world has changed in the internet age. The first book Mrs S has finished since she was at university in the very distant past!

Great fun!
I really enjoyed reading this book. The author uses a few fascinating stories from his long career as an art dealer, to explain how great paintings resurface. He goes through the detective work necessary to uncover "lost" works of art, thereby turning a humble painting worth maybe a few thousand, into a masterpiece that can fetch millions. If you have any interest in the art world, it is worth reading this book. I highly recommend it.

intersting book about the"hunt"
It's a good read about the art world and the discoveries still to be made.If you're buying this because you read "The Art Detective" and want to read more by Philip Mould - this isn't it. This is tth same book - onnky the British version. The difference is the last chapter -a lost Wonslow Homer discovered on a trash heap on the Irish coast In The Art Detective, The last chapter in Sleuth is about Damien Hirst's artwork and memorabilia form his dismantled restaurant in London. Get "Sleppers" instead.

Great read. Love Mould's easy style. Will definitely reread. Quick shipping. Perfect condition and it even smelt quite nice too. A bit like aftershave your wise, old granddad may wear. 😄

Moyen
