a nice finish
I'd been looking for a varnish to protect some plastic models, originally was looking at spray based varnishes (for speed/ease) but have had varying results so considered a 'brush on' instead. Considered a few types but liked the idea of a satin finish rather than completely flat or gloss, did a bit of research into Humbrol varnishes like this and I found a mix of reviews but still purchased a bottle.Liquid is very much like water, thankfully has a varnish smell (not too overpowering) so no potential mishaps and if left to stand it separates into 2 distinct solutions, a quick shake and it's back to all clear. Guides suggested using a flat brush to apply (also purchased at same time) and it goes on very easily - like water. I can advise not to overload brush and keep layers thin, it can go quite far per dip. You can re-coat for a more glassy finish but I've found a single coat is enough.Rather happy with final finish & application and so far no signs of yellowing on white areas.

I can not tumble everything so I put varnish on it so it looks great on display
I use this varnish on pebbles and rocks I find on beaches and country walks. So often you find a piece when it's wet and it looks dry and drab after a while. I can not tumble everything so I put varnish on it so it looks great on display. A couple of coats of this varnish and one of high gloss yacht varnish and they look as found wet. The bigger ones used as door stops or weights to hold now sheeting look great doing the job you want them to do. If they do get scratched jut put another coat of varnish,

Ideal for the model enthusiast
Easy to use and soluble in water. Ideal for giving a nice finish to your models and you can wash your brushes in water. So no special brush cleaner required.

Be warned!
This varnish leaves white marks behind, very visible when applied over dark surfaces and transparencies. It's so bad it has pretty much ruined a model I've spent months on. I deeply regret using it and would never use or buy it again. Humbrol paints are usually so good but not this one I'm afraid. Very minor plusses - it's easy to apply, self levelling and you can clean brushes in water. If used on white surfaces it gives a satin sheen. But the disadvantages completely outweigh any positives.
