'Chappie' is a robot, and the first true artificial intelligence, able to learn and develop as a human does. Some want to study him, and others want to destroy him. Kidnapped from the scientist who created him, Chappie becomes part of a street gang's dysfunctional surrogate family, who decide that he is too innocent and needs to be toughened up. Meanwhile, there are people hunting for him who believe that artificial intelligence is too unpredictable to be allowed to exist. The latest film from Neill Blomkamp, director of 'District 9' and 'Elysium', 'Chappie' stars Sharlto Copley, Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver.

5 stars but I can't remember why?
5 stars but I can't remember why?I'm rating this as I felt about it right after finishing watching it. My thought throughout the film was - wow this is good (and sooo much better than ex-Machina).I'm going to stick to my five stars because that reflects how I felt as I watched it but here are the things that could have (should have?) dragged it down. The film has Hugh Jackman and Sigourney Weaver in it. It's been about two weeks since I watched the film and I have to say they are literally forgettable as I couldn't remember who the big names actors were in the film. All other actors are competent but nobody feels that stretched by the material. The robot himself is convincing enough but is reduced by the story that sees him educated into the world. It all shouldn't work but underneath it all is - what would happen to an AI in this world? Whilst this perhaps wasn't the story that I wanted to see it was perhaps probably what would happen to an AI. The concept is far more interesting than the execution and I think is was the thought process that I went on that was most entertaining to me.Part Robocop (but not - he isn't used as part of the Police), part ex_machina (but much less dull) and part Short Circuit (Chappie is aliiiive!) it's an odd mix, maybe a love or hate it film?Me - I loved it...although I haven't got a huge urge to see it again.

A mess but a watchable one, sometimes even fun (in abstract)
setting of district 9(minus aliens but LOTS of crime/gangsters instead), a solid chunk of existentialism/ from robocop/ghost-in-the-shell, most of the story-beats from "short circuit" (1 and 2). Nothing original under the sun is one thing, can't tell if this movie doesn't want to try or if it's just so amusingly terrible that it's attempts fall flat from being so very common in wider sci-fi.Going to start with the characters, couldn't stand a single one of them. The robot was the closest to personable and even then only after 2/3 of the movie was done. he was a carbon copy of "johnny 5" personality development (but with deus-ex-internet later on).the rest can be summed up as stupid looking, stupid reactions to events and way to dumb to live unassisted.Every decision made, every response taken and every inaction by those with authority/responsibility made this ever more fiction and screw science or believability.setting was workablethe effects were good-enoughthe story was short circuit set in district nine (same city same world outlook, same director) but the ending? oh man that ending, it sure has been a while since I saw one that heavily telegraphed and deliberately?upsidesHugh Jackman MULLET! (that alone was worth watching the movie for, it was atrocious as were every other MCs hairdos/attitudes/decision-making)the moralising was actually not terribly donethe action (despite bad aiming) was mostly well doneswitch on, brain off, have a drink, laugh a lot

A great movie that leaves you guessing!
Chappie reviewAs always, I'll try to keep the review spoiler free!Chappie is a hard movie to both categorise and review. - turns out... this is a good thing.Chappie exhibits one of the long lost features of modern film, a trailer that does not spoil the whole show. When you sit down you have some expectations, don't even bother, the movie breaks every single one of them. An exciting prospect that leaves you wanting more! For those that don't know Chappie is another great movie from Neil Blomkamp. A "cut and paste" template similar to the likes of District 9 and Elysium. A dystopian, near future, South Africa that is facing its fair share of politics problems. The introduction of a new robotic policing system starts to lower crime all over, leaving only the big hitting gangs still operating.Chappie is a decommissioned police robot that receives a new sentient AI operating system during a test. Becoming, essentially, a quick learning, human, child the moral and ethical issues that come from a learning machine are raised well and handled without making the viewer feel confused or impatient with it all. Genuinely it intrigued me all the way through how it was handled. Also an interesting take that super AI robots are not born all knowing!Without giving anything away, the supporting cast are fantastic. Hugh Jackman plays an excellent antagonist and is probably perfect for the role considering the protagonist is a robot. He brings a human aspect. Chappie a entourage are stellar. Different from anything you would ever expect you cannot help but feel for them and their entwined stories. The ending is amazing and fits into the strange and wonderful story the movie projects.Disclaimer: it's not going to change your world. It's a good movie but there is nothing new or groundbreaking, I'm my opinion (being a bit of a futurist) it made some very thought provoking points about AI and the ethical issues of a learning, self aware, robot.Overall it great 4/5 or 9/10. Perhaps it's a bit to much of a district 9/Elysium love child but if you like either (or both) you will definitely like this. If your wanting a deep psychological thriller maybe it's not for you.Summary: great, unique, story.Amazing visuals.Stellar, relatively, unknown cast4/5.
