Shimmer and Sparkle 17524 Crazy Sewing Machine Set

I bought this for my cousin, who was 71/2 at the time. She very quickly learnt how to use it & has made a few things now. It does require initial help & supervision but it is very well made & easy to use.

I bought this as a Christmas present for my 7-year old granddaughter and chose this one as it looked the best available. What a disappointment. The first thing we found was that the bobbin case cover was missing. However we plodded on and tried to use it as my granddaughter was very excited about having her own sewing machine and was keen to get going. Then we found the foot pedal didn't work either. To thread the needle you have to remove the guard with a screwdriver which is not included. This is so fiddly to do and took ages to get it threaded and by the time it was done she had lost interest. A complete waste of money. Looks good but is not fit for purpose. Sent it back and got a refund.

I have read other reviews of this sewing machine and I must state that made us a little concerned over buying it for our 7 years old granddaughter. And this review will be heavily biased when taking into consideration how much she loves using it.To accompany this machine we also bought the excellent "My Sewing Machine" book by Jane Bull. That was most useful.It was useful that my wife has had her own sewing machine for many years and so was able to help with setting this one up for our granddaughter, without her help I'm not sure how we have done done as the instructions are rather primitive.In the description it does state that a power charger is included, or at least it did when we bought it. As there was none included we did get a partial refund form Amazon. And you do need one...! This machine will just otherwise eat batteries, whether you use the light or not. Thankfully it uses 6v and needs an adaptor over 1amp, which is easy enough to buy with a 5.5mm / 2.1mm tip. Once tha tis fitted then the machine is a pleasure to use, well at least it no longer eats batteries.When I mentioned bias with this review. I am meaning that the context I am trying to make with this review is tha tit was bought for a 7 years old eldest granddaughter who may or may not like sewing. As it is she is thoroughly enjoying using it and has made us a couple of phone cases already, from scraps of material. She loves using it and has had had no issues with its use or obvious limitations. When, and she probably will, get fed up of it then it will be passed down to her younger brother to try and then their younger sister. If she does continue to love it then as time passes we can invest in a more elaborate and expensive model for her.So whilst this machine might not be the best of what you can buy the price was cheap enough for us to risk buying it for a typical child who can flutter from what toy to the next not knowing how long they will want to play with it.In the context made this has been a very good buy for us and our granddaughter. The only minus really was the lack of power adapter as that is a must for this machine.

This is a lovely little machine. I bought it for my 8 year old daughter for Christmas and she loved it. Such a great price for a fully functioning mini sewing machine. I have loved teaching her how to use it and we have made lovely stuff with it. What a great buy.

This machine is for children. Well I helped my 9 year granddaughter to get started with it. Within 1/2 an hour she had the needle unthreaded twice. That is such a fiddle to rethread. You have to get a screwdriver (not supplied) and un do the back of the needle guard and get it off the machine. The needle is difficult to thread for adult hands. My advice is not to use the cotton cutter on the front of the machine as we were doing. It does not leave enough cotton and when the machine starts up the needle unthreads. My advice is to cut the thread long with scissors so when the machine starts up the next time it does not take the cotton and unthread the needle. The supplied scissors broke within a few uses so buy a decent pair. A needle guard is good but should be able to be clipped on and off with no need for screw drivers.The machine is nice and light weight. Easy for a child to carry. Quite easy to use although on a childs own I would say more for a 10/11 year old. My granddaughter managed the foot presser easily. I think I would invest in a power pack to run the machine off the electric supply as the batteries did not last long.It is a nice looking machine and that appealed to my granddaughter.If you can put up with being asked to thread the needle numerous times then this is a nice little childs machine. With leaving longer thread I am sure this problem could be solved.

Lovely item for the little girl who wants to follow arts and crafts. Patterns arent bad either.Make sure protection around needle area is on as over time does become loose.

Hard to use. Very finicky

For my grandaughter who is 5 for Christmas can't give view in how good is to use but think it's such value comes with lots of extras can't wait to use it too

I will be returning this. Very difficult for a 7 year old to use. On top of that, it runs by itself, literally. No one is pushing the pedal and the machine starts sewing by itself. Then when you do try to start it yourself it will not work. We put it back in the box and 15 minutes later it started sewing on its own, two rooms away in the box. Please send whatever is necessary to return this. I love amazon, and have only ever had to return one item that I ordered in error, but this product is ridculous.
