I’m sorry for your loss. We find the lighter very easy to use - and no chemicals. We use some kindling With a few logs on top. Pointing the lighter at the kindling it usually bursts into flame within 3 to 5 minutes. Carry on for a count of 10 to 15 to make sure it’s caught and you are done. Good luck.

This might work but I use this purely as per its design intent for lighting the BBQ. However I would state that the heat generated by the Looftlighter is far hotter than I have seen generated by a paint burner, so I would imagine that this tool will do the job (if it does not then you would be hard pressed to find anything else). One comment though - it sounds like that natural draught might be a problem for you, so I would make sure the flue / chimney has been swept recently, if you have already done this then a flue heater is the next logical step.
