Batgirl (2011-2016) Vol. 1: The Batgirl of Burnside

I have to admit, I reluctantly picked up Batgirl of Burnside, and despite all the hype I had read about it, I was a little wary. I had picked up, Batgirl: The Darkest reflection and, honestly, found it rather bland. Barbara Gordon, for me, has been Oracle the last twenty or so years, so when I heard the new 52 had rebooted and Barbra was no Batgirl, I have to say I was a little disappointed.To say I was surprised with Batgirl of Burnside would be an understatement. I really love what they have done with the character. The graphic novel starts off with Batgirl’s original costume being destroyed and another far superior one being made. The costume is a huge part of why I loved this book. I read a lot of graphic novels, and women are so often depicted fighting crime or causing chaos in glorified bathing suits with the bodies of pin ups.Batgirl is depicted as a regular 20 something. She has not been sexualised at all, and her costume? Perfect. The whole thing looks like she could fight crime in it without indecently exposing herself. The whole art style for this book has shifted, and frankly, really suits the content. People seem to forget this is Batgirl, a young woman, not Batman – a brooding multimillionaire. This art style is perfect for the content.While we’re on the subject of content, I can see why this comic has become so popular with teenage girls. Barbara is depicted as having the average life of a 20 something whilst fighting crime and dealing with grad school. The plots are engaging, in fact the ending of this book left me wanting more, which I can’t say has happened recently. I found myself enjoying the story the character and the art style so much, I ordered a copy for my niece.Yes, this book is different, but I feel that is the point. This book is light and energetic, and I think this is where people are getting confused. This is Batgirl, not Batman. She isn’t meant to be a brooding vigilante. Batgirl of Burnside has taken Batgirl in a new direction, and she is all the more better for it.

Okay this is my first review, as always the delivery service bringing me this book was excellent but onto the book itself.I wasn't sure what to expect, the style alone was a massive departure from the previous batgirl stories and the tone was different. And you know what? That's actually a good thing, as much as I love batgirl volume 1-5 it was dark, and batgirl said she was about bringing hope as opposed to fear. Admittedly you could question how effective her new approach is, moving to a trendy new neighbourhood, new college and new room-mates but she isn't burning down the old bridges (even though something did get burnt down). I found this new approach to be refreshing, deeply entertaining and got me enthralled into the character anew and I personally cannot wait until the next volume.If you are a fan of the previous batgirl stories you will not be disappointed

Really good quality! Almost can't believe it's a newly printed book for the amazing price. A little waiting period as expected but arrives definitely before the end of expected delivery dates. I'm happy with the product. :)

Batgirl takes on some really neat villains in this book. Lots of cool character designs and dynamic fight scenes. Batgirl of Burnside is both a celebration and criticism of selfie culture.

I'm really more of a Marvel fan, but I'll make an exception for this comic - it's well written, well drawn, and very entertaining. It also arrived very quickly and in a good condition!

I'm obsessed with this now! I thought this graphic Novel was just brilliant. Delivery came on time in lovely condition.

Logo que este novo visual foi anunciado, eu tive minhas dúvidas, pois sempre achei o uniforme original o máximo. Mas tenho que confessar que, lendo este primeiro arco da nova fase, este novo uniforme ficou bem legal, As histórias estão com um tom mais leve, sem perder a ação que o título exige. Não sou muito fã do estilo de arte da Babs Tarr, mas ele funciona bem para estas histórias.

You'll notice that the majority of reviews for this book fall into either 5-star or 1-star ratings. Basically, lots of people fell in love with Gail Simone's Batgirl and were disappointed because this isn't the same at that. My advice: go into this expecting a complete reboot of the character. I think it's a really fresh and new take, but it's probably not for everyone.Similar to Black Canary and Gotham Academy, this reads kind-of like YA (and I mean that in a good way). I think this is actually a great book to start with if you're new to DC or the Batfam - it's fun, it has heart, and the art is fantastic.
