This set of 6 place mats and coasters are made using a thick 5mm board with a cork backing and feature the Christmas tree design by Spode. This design features a Christmas tree in the center decorated with baubles, crackers and other various decorations with a pile of presents under the tree and finished with a Santa clause at the top of the tree. The tree is on a cream background with a border of holly and mistletoe with a plain green band. The approximate size of the place mats are W30.5 x H23cm (12" x 9") and the coasters are W10.5cm x H10.5cm. The place mats and coasters are sealed to ensure stain resistance and is heat resistant up to 100°C. In 1938, Harold Holdway, a young designer in spode’s England office, was asked to design a Christmas pattern for the American market. He was faced with a dilemma… he had never seen a decorated Christmas tree! In his first sketch the presents were suspended from the branches. “Wouldn’t that cause the to droop?” he wondered. He amended his sketch when he was told the American tradition was to place gifts under the tree. Holdway used another Christmas icon in a most delightful way, adorning the top of the tree with jolly St. Nick.
