Initially I was disappointed. However, as I have an abundance of time, I did a ton of YouTube research and find it wasn't the machine, it was me.Providing you accept:1) it can take 36hrs to dry some foods2) results depend upon atmospheric conditions.3) devote a day to researchThen this is amazing.It's got me into making fruit and vegetable powders as a cooking ingredient.For me, this is a great starter machine.The best YouTube resource for me was "the purposeful pantry" Darcy is a legend.

I received this item today and when I switched it on I noticed a strong burning smell; I assumed this was dust on the heating element and that it would go away over time but within an hour I heard a loud “pop” and it stopped working. I assume a fuse had blown. I then turned it over to find the bottom had melted.Having checked the previous reviews, at least two other customers had the same issue, so it surprising that a reputable company like Lakeland would continue to sell what is clearly a potentially dangerous appliance made in China.

Turned this on yesterday and after 10 minutes it was smoking and as seen in photos had melted! Do not recommend at all.

This worked for 5 whole minutes before melting through the bottom. The fan stopped working and the heating element melted through. It made the whole house smell of burning plastic.

I ordered this dehydrator because it was the smallest one with next day delivery. I’ve been overwhelmed by my apples and plums all ripening earlier than usual and all at the same time so a dehydrator is my only hope of saving a lot of the crop. It arrived next day with an easy to follow instruction booklet with tips and tables of suggested timings. I set straight to, preparing the apples as suggested and am thrilled to say that by this morning I had my first batch perfectly dried overnight. The taste is amazing!All the parts are easy to wash and dry, though I did this by hand rather than in the dishwasher. I would say that as it is a small dehydrator, it will take several batches to dry all the surplus apples and plums, but I don’t have room for a larger, more expensive one. This one is neat and sits on the worktop in the utility. When working, it made the room pleasantly perfumed with the smell of apples. This means that if I ever try drying something pungent like onions I will have to move it out to the garage. It comes with a 3 year option to return if not satisfied! I don’t think I’ll be taking Lakeland up on that. It feels like quality and performs well. What more can I say? Oh yes, I calculated the cost of electricity per batch (approx fills a 1ltr jar) even with recent price hikes is around 10p/hour so 50-60p for the full drying time.
