Q: is this a down filled jacket

No, it is a lightweight jacket with a polyester lining and polyester insulation. My husband is very pleased with his in that it provides a light jacket but is a step warmer and cosier than a shell. Hope this is helpful!

Q: My son is 14 and 5'6 would a mens small be too big for him? I cant seem to get my head around the sizes for North Face.

I'm 5'8" with a 40 chest size for a suit jacket. My North Face jacket is a Medium and fits well, but had I been slightly heavier built it would have been too tight if worn over a jersey. I'm not sure, but I think a size Small for your son would work. The cuffs are elasticated so wouldn't be a problem if slightly too long. I hope this helps.

Q: Is the inside insulation removable?

No! It's slimline but effective and an integral part of the garment.
