This is an effective and robust pillow speaker. It's big and ugly though!
Pillow speakers have transformed my life, in a small way. If I wake up at night I plug one of these into my phone and listen to a boring audio book at 75% speed. This usually enables me to get back to sleep within a few minutes.I'm now on pillow speaker number two. I loved my first one, but it wasn't strong enough to put up with my nocturnal thrashings about and the wire became disconnected from the unit, so I bought this as a more substantial replacement. This SoundLAB pillow speaker does the job quite well, but I don't like it very much. It's made of the same unattractive yellow plastic as your computer monitor from 10 years ago, and it's bigger than it needs to be. Also - the speaker holes are on the side, not the top. I want it to lie flat and fire the sound upwards towards my ear, but it's just not designed to do this. Possible solutions to this problem are:1. drill holes in the flat side, as a previous reviewer has done. Risk of damaging the unit so I won't be trying this.2. angle it vertically under the pillow. Impractical - I'm not doing this either.3. turn the volume up slightly. My current solution!Positives: it's built to last, it has a very long cable, and it's inexpensive.Negatives: speaker angle, looks, the cable might be too long for you if your bedside table is actually beside your bed.Overall, I'm using it but I don't like it, and I'm secretly hoping it breaks so I can justify buying a new one. Its bomb proof construction makes this unlikely, though.

Does not have a Volume Control so you need a radio etc, with volume adjust.
This unit does not have a volume control, and does not use batteries so you need a jack plug output where the volume is adjustable. My radio broke after 10 solid years use, and I am having touble finding a replacement radio which allows for the jack output to be turned up if required. I have sent 2 radios back already as the only jack output is less than a whisper and fixed and I know this speaker is still working fine. I love my DAB 4 Extra during the night as it is speech only, and am cross that I am expected to use battery operated headphones on new radios. This speaker unit is a replacement for one that broke - after 8 years of being under my pillow every night. .02pence per night makes this cost effective, which is why I was so keen to buy another. The speaker has a volume loud enough so I can hear it, but my husband isn't kept awake and the shape flat enough not to be felt through the memory foam pillow. For a tinnitus sufferer this is a perfect bit of kit, but be warned, once tried, you won't be able to sleep without it. I bought another one of these and keep it in my travel kit - as a back up. Check the jack output volume on your radio first though. If it isn't adjustable, you'll need something much fancier than this.

The WORST purchase I have ever made on Amazon!!!!
The level of TERRIBLE of this speaker is quite shocking. I know it is very cheap, but I expect it to do a reasonable job. Speakers are not expensive things to produce, I made one in my school electronics class that was infinitely better than this.1) Sound quality is SO poor that you need to turn it LOUDER to hear it. That utterly defeats the purpose. I am 38 and have excellent hearing, but I cannot hear this sufficiently when playing any audiobooks or radio, or even song lyrics, unless my partner also can.2) Sound comes out the sides of the speakers which as other people have mentioned is completely the opposite of what is required. Combined with above means this speaker is not fit for purpose as a pillow speaker.I would have returned it but at £3.13 it is not worth my time.Straight in the bin. I recommend you avoid it.

for a bit of late-night radio listening this is just fine. Build-quality looks good/robust
I see some folks have commented about the audio quality of this device. True Audiophiles, this is not for you. :-)However, for a bit of late-night radio listening this is just fine. Build-quality looks good/robust. Sound level and quality is perfectly adequate. Can't comment on long-term durability, but at under £3.50 including postage it only needs to last 20% as long as the 'market leading' device to represent good value. It's also much thinner than some others and so much for comfortable. Seems very well designed. To be honest I was not expecting much at this price but I'm impressed.

poor sound quality due to design floor.
well it's solidly made... so much so that there is a huge sound reduction as the speaker is encapsulated within heavy duty plastic casing! And only the tiny side openings to distribute any audio. As this is essentially for use under a pillow I would have thought the speaker would benefit from openings above it, allowing the audio to travel up through the pillow rather than outwards. if you're after a pillow speaker I wouldn't recommend this style of product.

Not fit for purpose.
Not fit for purpose. Despite trying it in a few different tablets, phones etc, the volume was so low that it was hard to hear, impossible under a pillow. Requested a return from the seller, but had to pay the postage, which was & £3.50, not really worth it for the refund. Lesson learnt, look carefully at the seller, usually amazon returns are excellent and no hassle. Definitely not recommended.

Great pillow speaker
I bought this for my wife, who likes the radio on all night. It replaced a short lived twin speaker which lost a wire and wasn't loud enough. This speaker has enough volume to be heard from beneath the pillow, whilst at the same time, it is not so loud that it disturbs me.I chose this speaker over a big brand similar one, that was several times the price, as it had better reviews. It was a good choice.

A bit clumpy.
Had one of the round white plastic pillow speakers for years which are much slimmer and can hardly be felt under a pillow case but it died and I thought I would try this Sound Lab one. Its well and solidly constructed with a good length of lead but the sound only emits from the edge so does not travel upwards so easily. As with most of the pillow speakers they need quite a lot of volume from the radio or sound source so a volume control on the speaker would save having to fumble in the dark to turn the volume down when you want to go to sleep. Having said that it works fine and was a reasonable price.
