Wonderful LA curriculum, even if you're not of this faith tradition
Let me just start by saying that I have been through a TON of language arts curriculums. I am trying to homeschool in a "classical" method so Abeka was not on the top of my radar. I also had the sense that Abeka came from a very fundamentalist perspective which also made me hesitate.A note on the curriculum content:I tried at least 6 other 2nd grade curriculums until I saw an ad for the Abeka Academy having 25 hrs of free streaming so I decided to watch it. I was blown away by the thorough phonics work as well as the integration of crucial early elementary grammar. I bought this book, and it did not disappoint! We are 3 weeks in and I have read through the whole year and I am so impressed by the scope and sequence. I think if we bought the whole LA curriculum from Abeka (spelling, writing, reading and this book) we would be overwhelmed, but using this curriculum as well as adding in our own lighter spelling, writing and reading has been perfect. The only thing that I would note about this book is that it does not "stand alone". For a complete experience you need to find Abeka flash cards and the teacher's edition, or a subscription to Abeka Academy video streaming (which is pricey!). For example, every page ends in a dictation box, which if you only have this book you will have no idea what to dictate to your student.A note on their faith tradition:Although I think Abeka in general is a very fundamentalist publisher with a clear bent toward their narrow views, this does not come across in this book. I would never use Abeka for history for example, because I can definitely tell they have a revised history to bend toward their message, rather than presenting the facts of what has happened. However this curriculum has almost no Christian content at all. If I was trying to secular homeschool I think I would have no problem with this particular curriculum.

Best phonics and language book ever
Builds on the skills learned in Phonics and Language 1, but much larger at 350 pages. While more advanced phonics and language skills are introduced, this text shores up skills learned in the previous text. Like Phonics and Language 1, pictures and picture scenes are useful aids in helping students learn to spell words from memory, instead of just copying and to know the expected word for fill-in-the-blank in sentences. There is lots of practice on letter combinations that have different sounds in words, such as ear, ei, oo, y, ey, or and many more. Multi-syllabic words and more complex words are introduced. Longer passages of reading are introduced and some writing. In short, any student, even an older student and struggling reader, can learn to read with these books.

Great language curriculum!
I love the A Beka language program! Emphasis on phonics provides a solid rewardable foundation. All my children are outstanding readers and have developed a love for reading.
