โ The Reception Year in Action will take the understanding of outdoor play, teaching and learning to a new level. Everyone who is involved with early years education and care should read this book!โ Helen Bilton, University of Reading, UK โThis is a fantastic book... it shows exactly how an excellent reception class is organised and run. There is a clear theoretical underpinning to the practice described and the photos really bring the text alive.โ Margaret Edgington, independent early years consultant and trainer Children thrive when a reception class is organised and managed by the adults, but led by the children. They learn and develop if they are in a stimulating environment which is carefully organised and when observations are used to support their โnext stepsโ. They take risks and surpass expectations when they have clear routines and boundaries, combined with a supportive staff and an enabling environment. The Reception Year in Action offers a unique insight into the workings of a highly successful Reception class as it progresses through a complete academic year. The book covers all aspects of practice from the organisation of the classroom and garden and the rationale behind this to the routines and boundaries that ensure children are safe, happy and therefore able to explore and learn. It tracks the events of each month in the year, paying particular attention to the environment, the role of the adult, links with parents, childrenโs individual needs and the key areas of learning and development. At each stage Anna Ephgrave gives the reason behind each decision and shows what the outcomes have been for the children. This revised edition has been updated to show how the methods described complement the revised Early Years Foundation Stage Framework and how the planning system has been received under the new Ofsted framework. Key Features include: photocopiable pages of planning sheets, record keeping sheets, sample letters to parents and role play resources also available for download; over 150 full-colour photographs to illustrate practice; lists of resources and materials; examples of recorded observations and planning for next steps; guidance on what to look for when assessing childrenโs progress. Written by an advanced skills teacher who is gaining national recognition for her practice, this book provides teachers with the practical ideas and evidence of success to work with confidence in a way that is rewarding, manageable and, above all, best for the children. Review: Fantastic read that I couldn't put down! - As an experienced teacher about to enter the world of EYFS I searched for a book that could give me an insight! I will take away amazing ideas and strategies. As I went through I made countless notes and highlighted lots of Anna's wisdom! Thank you! I can't wait to get started! Review: A useful guide for Reception teachers - The book is set out in months of the year that follow the flow of a Reception class. Good ideas and a lot of in-depth knowledge given in a very accessible way. You can pick it up and put it down at any point and can be used by teachers and other professionals, would recommend it to anyone who works within a reception class.

I have found this book tremendously useful, and one I go back to time and again. The book tracks a year in a reception class, following the activities, achievements and development of the pupils there. It shows the progress of the cohort and gives a genuine feel for the setting. I've bought a lot of books to support my work as a practitioner. This was one of my better purchases!

So far it's been a very insightful read and I can see how some of this has been implemented in to my school already. I am a teacher with limited experience in Reception so I was looking for something that gives me more of an insight, and about how the Reception year works. I only gave it 4 stars because I didn't agree entirely with some of Anna's views on private nurseries and preschools. I guess that's her personal experience. You'll have to read it to find out.

Useful
Very useful book with some nice ideas in on how to get the best from reception children. Not every school will be able to adapt to be the same as the school in the book but there are some great ideas which can be taken and adapted for your unit. It has helped me improve my reception class already.

Good ideas
Some really good practical ideas and obviously written by someone with lots of experience and awareness of just what Reception children need to progress through the year. Not all ideas are practical for every setting but at least some can be selected that may work for you. Recommended to Early Years Teachers and assistants.

Fantastic resource don't replace the first edition!
I love this book! It is so useful and motivational however I don't feel I got value for money buying this new edition. The original book is still sufficient unless you are new to Reception and EYFS.

An informative book even for an experienced practitioner.
I have worked as a Nursery Nurse for the past 6 years and have recently completed a PGCE. This is a fantastic book that charts the events of a reception class throughout the academic year and has really prepared me for my role as a teacher!
