Golden Kingdoms: Luxury Arts in the Ancient Americas

This books accompanies an exhibition currently on view at the Getty Center in Los Angeles. I attended the exhibition late last month and was blown away by the presentation and the objects, so decided to purchase the catalog. I'm so glad I did. It's a beautiful, highly illustrated publication on luxury arts in Latin America, from about 1000 BC through 1500 AD. The images are striking and the color reproduction impeccable. The book opens with essays from scholars on various topics (with images) pertaining to different cultures and materials. The second half of the book is the catalog, featuring hundreds of objects from cultures throughout Latin America -- gold, feathers, stone, shell, silver, copper, ceramics, and more. This will be on my coffee table for years to come.

A fascinating look into how the ancient wealthy lived. Artisans created beautiful works of jewelry, precious objects and with such skill. Studying archaeology, I literally feel struck in the mud, but this volume offers a glimpse into a different world.

A magnificent volume. If you care about the current state of research on the Pre-Columbian world, this is the book for you. Bravo to all concerned

This was an astounding exhibit and the catalog added further breadth and depth.
