DC's Legends of Tomorrow: Season 1 [Blu-ray] [2016] [Region Free]

Struggles for a while but does get better........
The premise for Legends of Tomorrow is an interesting one with so many possibilities - in reality the show creaks and it groans at times but definitely improves over the 16 episodes that make up this first season. The set up is that age old story - we have a world wide apocalypse brought about by a powerful, immortal madman (Vandal Savage) and a group of heroes (or otherwise) have to travel through time to try to prevent it. Our merry band is made up of bit part players from the DC Universe, many of whom will be familiar to viewers of Arrow and Flash, we're sharing the same TV universe here. It's not an easy task though, time travel capers never run smoothly and many time hopping hi-jinks follow. Prison breaks, bird monsters, giant robots, serial killers and much more fly by as we jump around from the distant past to the distant future and everything in between. So there's plenty of action to be getting on with alongside a fair amount of moralising and emoting. It can be dark at times (there's plenty of death) but they grease the wheels with large doses of humour - admittedly some of this works better than others but such is life.Likewise some characters are more interesting and effective than others - Captain Cold and Heatwave for example are way stronger than I expected whilst Hawkman and Hawkgirl are especially dull despite all the possibilities their rich backstory provides. The acting abilities are rather mixed also.Overall though, a stodgy start develops into something more fun and adventurous. A trip to the old west in episode 11 is a definite season highlight then the episode that follows is perhaps even better - showcasing the kind of brain bothering time paradox carnage that the show is capable of. More of it in Season 2 would be very welcome. Speaking of Season 2, the very final twist in the tale here will surely appeal to DC comic book readers and opens up fun possibilities for where this can all go from here. One other thing - this series does contain a few spoilers for Arrow Season 4 and Flash Season 2. If you're a completist, you'll probably want to watch the first 8(ish) episodes of those seasons first.

Fun adventures through time with supporting Arrowverse characters
As a fan of Arrow and The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow is a worthy entry into the Arrowverse. It is by far the least grounded of the three; both literally and figuratively. Armed with a time-travelling spaceship, a team of supporting characters and the bad guy from the Arrow S4 / Flash S2 crossover (with a similar premise), there's certainly a lot of interesting adventures to be had. If you're willing to ignore or not think too much about some of the questionable science with regards to time travel paradoxes and don't take the story too seriously, Legends of Tomorrow excels at bringing out the best in all of the characters. Whilst a tad cheesy and lacking in impactful cliffhanger endings, at its heart there is a good fun show here. I particularly like the idea of the team travelling to different time periods and seeing how the world was / will be. What I would've liked to see more of though is variation in the story, as for the entire thing they're trying to bring down Vandal Savage; which is fine except that the side-stories feel too marginal and unimportant compared to Arrow and The Flash. There's also a distinct absence of some Arrow / Flash characters, so it'd be nice to see more of them in future seasons.

I enjoyed this series a lot
I enjoyed this series a lot. The characters are all well flushed out and all feel engaged. Yes the plot lines can be a little silly and enough jokes are made to show that the show knows, but that's half the fun of it; this fun is especially noticeable in a Wild West episode about 2/3 through the series. In the first 3-4 episodes they can feel a bit one dimensional, but with such a large cast, character development isn't going to be that fast.My one complaint is that there is only one baddy across all of the episodes (Randal Savage). They also killed my favourite character in the series near the end (no comment as to who).

Silly, but entertaining
As long as you are prepared for a series that concentrates on side characters from the established CW shows, and that takes a couple of episodes to find its feet then this is a fun and engaging series. The tone is a bit wobbly at times with comedy episodes followed by something deadly serious, and the acting of some of the cast can be described generously as 'not very good' but I enjoyed it a lot. It was always entertaining and some surprising characters became my favourites.

super powered yes, legends..debateable
The opener was quite week and i was really starting to regret buying the dvd, but after 3 or episodes they find their mojo and start to get a little better. I wouldn't say the series is quite as good as flash or arrow, but it's a good a series that's worth a watch. It kind of makes me imagine what doctor who would be like if selected a group of super powered assistants. Kind of wondering where (and when) the next series might go.

Cheesiest DC yet!
Maybe I've been spoilt watching the Excellent Flash and early Arrow series with their great production values and character developments, because this for me looks cheap and rushed. The main timeship set looks like something out of an old BBC production, with no atmosphere or design aesthetics at all. The lighting is awful, and how big is the time ship meant to be? Is it like the Tardis bigger on the inside? The characters are not much better.. I'm sure Darvill is a good actor but in this he comes across as weak and hardly convincing as a time master (blatent rip off of Dr Who but without his strength of character)So far I've only managed the first 10 episodes but have found the other supporting cast members also weakly written and hard to get behind. The best is Captain Cold but Atom is underused - probably due to budget restraints.I've heard there is a second season on the way (how?) So I hope they change the mission away from the Savage storyline! All in all you could probably bypass this series and not regret it, but being the completest I am will probably watch it to the end and add it to my super hero series collection anyway.
