Gunbuster Complete Original OVA Series

Beautifully restored anime classic
Top O Nerai, GUNBUSTER is a venerable production of Studio Gainax that combined science fiction, melodrama, and corny parody into a classic. The Blu-Ray disc was perfect, with no flaws in the transfer. The English dub was well done. My chief complaint with most dubs is the poor pronunciation of Japanese words such as personal names, place names, and specially coined parts of speech. I had no issues with this dub. I highly recommend this product.

A Great Release for a beloved classic
I’ll get right to it. The ONLY thing missing from this edition is Gunbuster The Movie (which just mashes together parts from the OVA into a movie) and Diebuster (the sequel to Gunbuster). Beyond that you have all the OVA episodes here in an excellent visual collection. This is Mecha anime at its finest and a must have in any true collectors library imo.Gunbuster is best looked at as a combination of Top Gun and The Forever War. It starts as almost a Shonen mecha series, with the protagonists getting through their troubles on the and hard work. But it ends up being a desperate war story with humanity fighting for survival against a seemingly unbeatable opponent. Due to the fact that the battles in space take place so far away from earth the concept of time dilation is used, which basically means that everyone who is out in space experiences time differently. For them it might be a few days of combat. But for everyone on earth it’ll be years that have passed. And this is something that separates Gunbuster from other popular mecha anime like Gundam. The battles that are fought are just as important as the time that the main characters lose with their loved ones back on Earth, and the loss of time is what makes the ending so powerful.Gunbuster is imo one of the best mecha anime ever produced. There is excellent action sequences, emotional quiet moments with the protagonists, and a story where you can root for the good guys as they gradually march (or fly) toward a bittersweet ending.

A true classic
This was my first time watching this series, and it won’t be my last. I’m not sure what I was expecting beyond giant robot fights, but this series had me completely captivated the whole time. I was completely surprised by how much detail they put into everything, and yet was left wanting more. Six episodes just wasn’t enough. Now I need to watch the sequel series. There’s a little bit of fan service, so if that’s not your thing be forewarned. Otherwise, buckle up for one amazing ride.

An all-time anime masterpiece receives an English dub that does it justice
Gunbuster itself, there's no reason I should have to sell you on. If you don't already think it's a 10/10, I'm probably not the one who can change your mind on that. That said, this classic has been long awaiting an English dub, and if you're already a fan or own a previous subbed release, you may wonder if the dub is good enough to justify your purchase. Let me tell you right now, it ABSOLUTELY IS. The whole cast nails it, but the voice of Noriko really goes above and beyond, which is exactly what the voice of Noriko needs to do. Apart from the superb dub, more of the onscreen text has been subtitled than was present in the Bandai Visual DVD release. All-in-all, if you want to feel like you're watching Gunbuster for the first time again, this is a fantastic way to do it. If you've never seen it, you can buy this, watch the subs and the dub, and have two amazing experiences.

It came out in 1988 on a vhs tape and from there it was released back in 1998 dvd until now!
This is one of my favorite Japanese Anime series since it was released on a VHS tape, then from that 1990’s dvd, and now in 2023 Blu-ray! Oh joy! This series has probably inspired many more like this as well, but nothing like what I’ve seen before young teenagers women about to set forth into to space in the coming future, but here’s the information about it, When the space aliens killed Noriko’s Takaya’s father, she swore that one day she would become a space pilot. Yet being accepted into the space academy doesn’t solve every problem. Suspected of favoritism from the other students as the daughter of the admiral who lost, and having a stark lack of talent that prevents her from piloting a machine, Noriko’s hopes for the future don’t seem bright. But then, when the 2 candidates going into space are announced, Noriko’s surprised that her name is right next to the star of the school (and Noriko’s own Idol), Kazumi Amano. Has Noriko’s hard work paid off? Or is there more to Coach Ohta’s reasons for selecting her? Most of all, is Noriko really ready for the horrors of space? Find out in Aim For The Top!: Gunbuster, a true Masterpiece of anime history, and Hideaki Anno’s commercial directorial debut!! It was originally released in 1988-1998! But it is such a classic!! So check it out yourself 👍🏻A++++++

A cult classic
Also, I got this on sale for under $30 us. What do you get when you mix Aim for the Ace!, Top Gun, and The Forever war all into one you get this. And my opinion its writing, cast, and animation hold up even today. And even set a few things for the studio that made it. And yes, this does have an English dub for the main ova but not the shorts which feel more like deleted scenes. Also, for some reason the final episode is mostly in black and white. And the actual tile mecha doesn't appear until halfway in the series. As for extras there isn't much. And I feel it's worth watching if your fan of the mecha genre. Also, the only other way to watch in English as of this review is though Crunchyroll which right now is a Fuster cluck.

Excellent English dub
I first saw Gunbuster via Netflix DVD around 2012.It was subtitled only but I still really enjoyed it.I never got a chance to buy the DVD set and then at some point the price on Amazon reached several hundred dollars! As soon as I found out there was a NEW blu-ray edition that came out recently I just had to get it!I saw every episode except for the last one, dubbed and I was pleased with the quality of each voice alongside the DIALOGUE!😜Oh yeah the video quality was good too, imo, yay blu-ray.

1980s anime does not get any better.
High school girls wear skimpy uniforms and control giant robots to save the world from dangerous space monsters. What not to love? I might be biased because I knew the person on whom the character Smith Toren was based. Anno Hideki's (Neon Genesis Evangelion) big break. A romp of anime thrills, chills and tropes.
