Insurgents on the run
Second in the series of movies that adapts the popular 'Divergent' series of books. This is not a good jumping on point for those who haven't seen the first film Divergent [DVD] [2014] or read the books. So go and start with that.Regular viewers/readers, read on.Picking up from the end of the first film, Tris and her companions are on the run. They need somewhere to hide out. But can they be safe forever? Can her relationship with Four overcome all the obstacles fate is putting in their way?And what's in the mysterious box that Jeanine is obsessed with opening? She might just need the Divergents after all...This is a solid enough adaptation of the book. Which opens up the world of the story far more, bringing in some interesting new settings and characters along the way. Although purists might not be happy with the way it brings things together in the final quarter. Although, as you'll see from extras, the writer didn't mind that. The leads are excellent. Shailene Woodley as Tris really carries the film. There's also some great location, costume and design work. The way it brings the world of the story to life is really superb. But it's a bit of a middle part of a story, and as such it's not really as strong a tale as the first film. It only really comes to life in the final quarter, with some dazzling visual inventiveness. It does though do what it needs to do. And get the characters and the story to a point where what needs to happen next has been more than adequately set up.Three stars for casual viewers. Four for fans of the books. Who don't mind the earlier mentioned aspect. The dvd has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English.Subtitles; English. The disc begins with several trailers, which can be skipped using the next button on the dvd remote.Extras are:An audio commentary from two of the producers. From Divergent to Insurgent: A four minute long featurette, which like most of these is brief snippets of the cast talking about the film. Along with clips. It's a bit too short to hold much detail.Marketing gallery: A selection of short features. But most of these are also cast talking about film along with clips, the usual kind of promotional material for films.Sneak Peek.Sneak Peek with Shailene Woodley. In theatre promotional making of.Are all brief features of this kind, which do start to repeat material also.HBO set visit is ten minutes long, and a bit more detailed and watchable. There's an image gallery of posters for the film. And the four different cinema trailers for it.However, the two disc edition, if you get it, is worth picking up. Although it doesn't have the two hour long making ofs that used to make extra discs worthwhile, it does have:Insurgent in Style: Eight minute long look at the costume design.Simulations: the next level: Eighteen minute long look at the visuals and design of the films final quarter.Veronica Roth: Tell all; Sixteen minute long chat with the book's writer and look at her time on the film set. These are all extras as they should be. Good and detailed and interesting viewing. So this is the edition to get. And they do make that version of it a four star release as a whole.

Love love love!
I can’t believe it’s taken me all of these years to know about and watch these films. I LOVE them and I wouldn’t say these type of films would be my first choice… until now. Definitely give them a watch.

... unless it's Star Wars or something equally epic (I hate that overused term
Update: Okay so this film is now well out of date and all the free channels have played it several times. Must be honest, I can't watch this anymore. Watched it about 3-4 times and this is going to be enough for the next 15 yeards for sure.So I need to start off by saying that unless it's Star Wars or something equally epic (I hate that overused term, but here it truly does apply) I hate sequels. Not all, mind you, but in general. To me, things just don't tend to be all that great the second time around. In this case, however, I was very pleasantly surprised. Not only was it full of action (some of the dream sequences are incredible), but the storyline was quick and held my interest. I hate when things get slow or drawn out to fill the length of a film or worse yet, to set up the next movie. That certainly was not the case here. I have heard a lot of comparisons to Hunger Games and I did find there to be some similarities in the plot, but the Divergent Series was executed much better IMO. The third Hunger Games movie was a snooze fest! I am excited to review the third installment of this series. For now all I can say is that they nailed #2.

On we go.....
So here we are again, the next chapter in the Divergent story and things are taking small steps toward the eventual endgame. It's watchable and enjoyable enough without having the same kind of narrative thrust or originality of the first flick. The threadbare plot finds out heroes on the run with the slimy bad guys hunting them down. There's the added element of a mysterious box that only a Divergent can open which apparently contains a very important something or other. It mostly feels like a MacGuffin, giving the central characters an extra reason to run around tormenting each other but to be fair, it proves to be pretty important and intriguing in the end.The quality cast holds things together nicely again with Naomi Watts joining the gang this time out (sporting dark hair and looking about half her age). There's a decent slice of action to keep things ticking along, including one of the best train dodges since Stand By Me. As seems to be the case with these types of franchises these days, much of this is about building to the next instalment and the ground work laid here offers up some interesting possibilities.

Loved it!!
I thought this movie was great! I have read and loved the books and I thought this was very well done. Obviously its not exactly the same as the book, but what film is? It can't be. The book itself didn't really have one central plot but it didn't need to because its a book. But a film generally does so the whole box plot added in was understandable and I actually thought it helped to enhance the story and Tris's character and was actually very interesting. Even with the box, the film stays true to the main story and the characters. I thought Shailene Woodley was great in it and she seemed very comfortable in her role. As did Theo James as Four. And I was very pleased that Kate Winslet played Jeanine as a lot more dastardly than in the first film; she's a nasty piece of work and she showed it. The whole film felt more comfortable in itself than the first one (though I absolutely love the first one!) and I thought the effects were great! The dvd itself had some great special features as well. Overall; great movie and great dvd!
