This field is overflowing with reference works but I think Duke's is one of the best. He's frank about when expert conventional
This was a gift for friends--I have a well-used copy bought years ago. It's my first reference for all ills. This field is overflowing with reference works but I think Duke's is one of the best. He's frank about when expert conventional medical authorities should be consulted and when the layperson can safely attempt to manage health issues through alternative means. The writing is clear and direct, and Duke provides many sources and studies to back up his own observations and research. I recommend this regularly to everyone interested in wellbeing.

A brilliant, comprehensive and thorough guide to herbal remedies....
James Duke provides a wealth of information and knowledge in this book. The Herbal Handbook is a comprehensive guide to all (both common and rare) herbal extracts. The book begins with a very thorough introduction to herbal remedies and also covers a guide to various ratings he uses throughout the book so it is really easy to understand. There is also a very interesting chart in the introduction covering alternative herbal remedies for common complaints also listing the normal prescription medicines offered for these. The rest of the book is set out in an easy reference A - Z guide and lists what the herb is, what it is used to treat, medicinal properties and dosage options followed by a safety rating. As I mentioned before, this features from the normal everyday herbs like Chamomile through to the more unusual like Bloodroot. At the back of the book there is an A - Z index of symptoms and conditions and underneath each one is a list of herbs used to treat them. This is probably the bit of the book I use the most. For example, whilst suffering with nausea recently I knew ginger was a good idea to take, but this lists 17 possible cures!I think that this book is a great buy, both for the herbal beginner right through to practitioner level. There is a lot of knowledge in this book, all packed into almost 400 pages. Definitely buy this if you want a quick easy to use reference for treating with herbal remedies.

guide to herbal remedies
I was recommended to this book by a friend. I was very pleased that it was easy to understand and look up ailments and related remedies quickly and easily. I have used some of the remedies already and have been amazed at the positive results. I too have recommended it to other friends.

A Serious Reference
This is a well-written reference for the serious herbalist. Unlike "The Green Pharmacy", this book tends to discuss the herbs, rather than the problems that need them. There is a table at the end of the book that references the herbs to the malady, so all is not lost. I would recommend this book as a desk reference for the herb-savvy physician or the ND, or even a well-read herbalist. I have already recommended this book to several of my herbalist friends. It belongs in any herbal library!

wow
I really was looking forward to this book from the information I read about it and was not disappointed. The most phenominal aspect to the book was not only the safety ratings plus the number of actual herbs presented but the dosage options. This has been a feature lacking in many books through out the past. I have looked for a comprehensive herbal book for years and this was well done. The design in which this author presented each herb was easy to read and follow. A must have for any serious herbalists library.

We refer to this book often
We are trying to find alternatives to some medications which cause side effects. This handbook has been very helpful, and we always check with our doctor before adding any herb to our regimen. Our 9-year old granddaughter gets very car sick, and we read about ginger for motion sickness. Her doctor OK'd it, we bought some chewable "Ginger Trips" for her, and it worked like a charm. Please read the cautions for each herb, though, as some can be dangerous when combined with certain prescription meds such as blood thinners etc. Our pharmacist has also been very helpful in guiding us. Sure wish American medicine practiced more herbal treatments instead of prescriptions with sometimes very bad side effects.
