Prequel: The Midnight Breed Series
A Touch of Midnight by Lara AdrianBook #0.5: Midnight Breed SeriesSource: PurchaseMy Rating: 4/5 starsMy Review:For those, like myself who started the Midnight Breed series with the first full-length novel, Savannah and Gideon have always been in the picture, always been a solid unit and, always been fan favorites. In all honesty - and totally out of character for me given my love of backstory – I never really questioned the beginning of Savannah and Gideon. They are so much a part of the very fabric of the Midnight Breed series that I never considered where they came from. Thank goodness Lara Adrian was apparently questioned by someone because the story of Savannah and Gideon is one that needed to be told.Savannah Dupree has a gift that has set her apart from everyone her entire life. Any physical contact with an item will immediately give Savannah the history of the object and though she has always considered this gift to be something of a curse, it will in fact be the key to her future happiness. As an art history student (YAY!!!! A character working in my field ) Savannah can easily touch an item an know its story but she enjoys the study and the research. As a means of furthering her education and experience, Savannah and her roommate have taken on an internship with one of their professors in which they are to catalogue and fully examine a cache of goods donated to the university. The work is slow and tedious but Savannah loves the work especially when she comes across a beautifully wrought sword stashed in one of the back rooms. Though she would normally never touch an item with her bare hands, Savannah touches the sword and the brief glimpses of its history that she is afforded is as confusing as it is disturbing. In the coming days, Savannah tries to forget the glimpse of history that she received by touching the sword but as events begin to spiral out of control, Savannah understands that she has become caught up in something far greater than she ever could have conceived of.Gideon has spent the last couple of centuries working in the service of the Breed. As a vampire with exceptional speed, strength and, intelligence, Gideon has always been an asset in the field. He has pledged his life to protecting both the Breed and humans and for centuries he has done so with unwavering commitment. Savannah Dupree is something and someone Gideon never planned for and from the moment he sees her on TV, he is drawn to her. Her association with the sword, the fallout from the murder of her roommate, the tracking of her by Rogues are all interesting to be sure but it is her intelligence, her beauty and, her status as a Breed mate that is truly intriguing. Though Gideon knows getting involved with Savannah is a very bad idea, he can’t seem to stop himself from seeing her. As with every Breed book, Savannah and Gideon’s HEA is a hard road that involves, Rogue attacks, a lot of denial and, some serious, life-threatening injuries. The Bottom Line: I can’t believe I never questioned the backstory of Savannah and Gideon!! I have always liked both characters, particularly Gideon and his geeky awesomeness but now that I know how they came to be, I think I may like them even more. Gideon’s backstory and how he became the backbone of the Order is intimately tied to his feelings for Savannah. Savannah’s presence within the compound and her ability to make the others feel welcome and safe is tied to her love for Gideon and her desire protect those who have loved and accepted her unconditionally. At the end of the day, Savannah and Gideon remain two of my favorite Breed characters and I am so glad their story has been written.

Great read
I have been wanting to read this series for a while. I am very excited that now it’s time. I was not disappointed. So far the wait has been worth it. Sexy, suspenseful, and fast paced. A very good read. I’m looking forward to the other books in The Midnight Breed series.

Can vendettas be solved with love?
Savannah is able to see the past of an object simply by touching it, but she is intent not to let on to her gift now that she is in Boston at college so that she is not considered a freak. That is until she sees a beautiful sword in her Art History department telling her not only of a warrior, but also of the brutal death of two small boys at the hands of vampires. She thought she was crazy until she seen that her friend was killed by one of these creatures to retrieve the sword. The only problem now is who could she trust and what could she do? Gideon is a member of the Breed, which are otherworldly beings similar to vampires from lore. There are Rogues, who have given in to the bloodlust, and those who have not. Gideon is part of the Order, which is a section of the Breed that hunts down the Rogues, killing them before they can decimate the humans. That has been his sole purpose since his two younger brothers were murdered over 300 years before and now the sword that ended their lives is on the news being talked about by a young coed. Will Savanah be able to trust the tall, blonde that has just waltzed into her life after the death of her roommate or will his nature be too much for her to handle? I have never thought of vampires as aliens, but I suppose it is as good of an explanation as any. The story itself is cute and fast paced, but I feel he gets forgiven just a bit too easily or the female being from the backwoods of Louisiana. But, maybe I have just read too much Sookie Stackhouse. All in all it is a fun little romance read.

Too short
372 to 18. Way to much difference in age.The story was incomplete. Writing it as a novella was doing this story an injustice.

Not for a new reader
I have to admit, I have been waiting for Savannah to die since the beginning of this series. Not that I have anything against her. To the contrary, I’ve never really developed any feelings for her at all. We see plenty of Gideon, but Savannah, has always just kind of existed benignly. Maybe it’s that. Or maybe the Black Dagger Brotherhood has destroyed my ability to trust in a pre-existing relationship. (Poor Wellsie!) But whatever the case, I figured it was only a matter of time until she bit the big one and eventually Gideon would fall in love again, but this time on page. I guess I need to rethink that, now that Lara Adrian has given us their origin story.I’m glad she wrote this. It gives this couple some depth. But I can’t say I loved the romance.Savannah is only 18 years old as this novella begins. We learn she has the gift of psychometry and can get glimpses of an object’s history when she touches it. Shortly after she discovers an old sword at her university, someone kills her best friend, hoping to get it. Gideon hears her talking about it on tv, and recognizes it as the sword he wielded centuries ago. He suspects a Rogue was behind the attack and goes looking for Savannah to get more clues. It takes a while for these two to meet up, but once they do, it’s pretty much love at first sight. OK, lust at first sight. It’s a whole day or two before it’s “love.” But regardless, it’s WAY too fast. I just couldn’t make any kind of emotional connection. I also had a problem with just how young Savannah is. The older I get, the younger 18 seems.I did like seeing the beginnings of Gideon’s geekiness and I liked the flashback of how the Order was back in the 70’s! This is a prequel novella, but I wouldn’t recommend new readers start here. There’s just not enough to it. Wait until you are a few books into the series for maximum enjoyment.Rating: B-

This was an excellent read which I really enjoyed
I have had this book since December 2013 unread. This was a free read and is currently still a free read. A reading buddy told me how much she was enjoying the series so I decided to finally start reading it.This is Gideon and Savannah's story. Savannah is black and Gideon is white. This was an excellent read which I really enjoyed. There is a good story-line. Savannah has discovered she has a gift which reveals to her horrific events. These events leads to meeting Gideon who has some gifts of his own. This was a great paranormal story and I have found a new series that I want to read.

Okay read
Short read which was okay. Described the background to the series fairly well and well written, just not enough to persuade me to read more from this author.

Hhhhhm
I'm not impressed I hope the rest of the series isn't quite so slow and has a stronger story line. I like a bit of insta love but some times it can be to much they can still have feelings for each other and play a little hard to get. Overall I'm confused but then I know this is a short story that was written after the series it's self so I'm still looking forward to the rest I think any way.

Pleasantly surprised
I got this book free and wasn't expecting much, I was pleasantly surprised the story of how the two main characters met and how they journey through the novella at a good pace. The authors descriptive carries you on the journey with them. I read that this is a prequel to the midnight breed series and I am now going to purchase the first book in said series and I can't wait to start reading g and follow them to see what happens next.

Great prequel-a must read!
A fantastic start to the Midnight Breed series. Having read about Savannah and Gideon in the rest of the series, I couldn't wait to read about how they came to be together.Considering that these two characters are already so well known to Lara Adrian fans this book does not disappoint. The 1970's setting is well written, but not overdone. For those of us who were not around to live through the decade of flares and strikes, it was a fascinating insight into a past era (especially the dawn of much of today's technology). The plot is paced well as is the burgeoning romance between the two and you find yourself carried along for the ride as you turn each page. With a dangerous villain, a dashing hero and a heroine who is perfectly capable of standing up for herself-what more can you want!
