Excellent survey of British studio ceramics from the 20th century to the present
Excellent survey of the British studio ceramics of the last fifty years with occasional pieces from almost a century ago. This is the exhibition catalog of the 2017 show at the Yale Center for British Art, large portions of which are built around a single collector's vision of the late 20th century, now extending into the 21st. The book is beautifully illustrated with large, high quality photographs of some of the best works of the key ceramic artists of the period working primarily in Britain. This includes many examples which were collected before master ceramists such as Lucie Rie became so expensive. We particularly appreciate the interview with John Driscoll of Garrison, New York, the collector of many of the works. The show also includes examples from British institutions and the exhibition will move on to the U.K. after it is finished in New Haven. The book is as good a display of great pieces of the last fifty years to be found anywhere and includes excellent information regarding the artists who range from the Michael Cardew and the Leach family through Hans Coper, Lucie Rie, Alison Britton, Elizabeth Fritsch, Gordon Baldwin and Ewen Henderson up to current standouts such as Jennifer Lee, Gareth Mason, Akiko Hirai, Magdalene Odundo, Martin Smith, Philip Eglin and Halima Cassell. We found it very helpful that the book includes the influences of Korean and Japanese ceramics as appropriate with excellent examples beautifully illustrated.
