Yes they have zippers and very easy to clean and wipe down with a microfiber cloth

How easily do the legs come off for the root rest?

The legs just screw on. So, they can easily come off. Or since you would need to attached them out of the box, you just not put them on. Since this is a modular set all the base pieces are the same. The footrest piece really is the same as the seats just without the back or side. This means that it is designed to be at the same height to rest your feet on. Hope that helps.
