The Seal Children

I’ve always enjoyed selkie myths, and this is version is particularly welcome because the husband/father does not steal or hide his partner’s skin. Enchanted by his music, she gives it to him to keep safe, as a sign of trust. After their son and daughter are born, “Years passed, and the sea-woman began to change. Her hair lost its shine, her eyes dimmed, and she found walking difficult. It was time for her to go back [to the sea]. Ewan found her sealskin and one night, when the moon was full, she walked back into the sea and plunged underneath the waves... Ewan turned and made his lonely way up to his cottage. From that day, his nets were always full. The sea people guided shoals of sparkling fish to his boat while Ewan played tunes on his fiddle to say thank-you.”This is especially valuable as a story where a children’s parents need to separate, but neither one of them has done anything wrong. The son eventually joins his mother beneath the sea.

I bought a used copy. The book that I received was a previous library edition and was a bit more banged up than I expected. However, the story itself was lovely and the illustrations were even more beautiful than I had expected. The cover image doesn't do justice to the rest of the book which has a watercolor-ish art style (I don't really know art well enough to describe style or technique accurately, but it's pretty).

I bought this book for my daughter, and I know she is just going to love it. Jackie Morris's stunning illustrations really bring this tale to life. It's something a bit different from the usual fairytales.

Upon opening the package for this book I was struck with how absolutely gorgeous the illustrations were. The story was even better, a lyrical, almost poetic tale of love, separation and hope. Any fan of selkie legends or excellent Childrens books, would do well to have a copy for themselves!!

Creative children's story and paintings for all ages. My 3 year old granddaughter liked it, it is fun and unique.

My favorite artist and writer!! I will buy more of her books!

The art is absolutely gorgeous and the story of the children is lovely until the end, when they’re separated and and entire community leaves for America. We felt a bit let down by the ending, to be honest, but otherwise it’s very charming.

This is a delightful book which is beautifully illustrated and the telling is sheer poetry. A great gift for children of all ages. Set in the ruins of the Pembrokeshire 'lost village' of Maes y Mynydd the author creates a legend of the sea and of the villagers of long ago

The story might not quite have the magic of Marianna and the Merchild but Jackie Morris's iluustrations win the day again. The story could explore the feelings of the family as it is pulled apart a bit more - even for a children's audience.

A beautifully mystical read and captivating illustrations by Jackie Morris. A must for anyone’s bookshelf, young or old.Arrived promptly and in very good condition. Would throughly recommend.
