Madonna: A Rebel Life

I originally bought the audiobook and then bought the book digitally on the Books app on my iPhone. I loved both so much that I wanted to buy the physical book. This book is amazing, the colored pictures and the index in the back. Just wow! Such a great book. Buy this book.

Came fast. Good book.

To be honest, I had zip interest in reading about Madonna, but I was enthralled by Mary Gabriel's previous book, "Ninth Street Women," so I was curious to check this out. The megastar's ascent is exhaustively--but not exhaustingly--documented from her childhood in Michigan through the macho morass of the music business. Her resilience, talent, courage, and occasional hubris are fully explored, and the book will send you to her videos and movies to find out more. She's one for the ages, and Gabriel nails her story.

Great book. Fairly comprehensive. What I find missing is the story behind her songs. That part seems to be rushed in to accommodate other facts. But all in all I will recommend the read to all fans. They’ll prob find a thing or two they don’t know about Madonna

Great biography

What a fawning book. It is written like a incredibly well researched well detailed book with a point of view that Madonna almost never does anything wrong. Always the victim. While I enjoyed learning some interesting details and this interesting woman, I began to moan as one person after another mistreats her.It would be fun to read a balanced look into her incredible life.

I have been a fan since 1982 when I bought her first single Everybody! This book goes into so much detail and it’s backed up with facts. Amazing story of how Madonna because the most influential female in music and the best selling female musician of all time. Phenomenal read.

Mary Gabriel presents this biography from an academic perspective, particularly from the Cultural History discipline. So, she analyzes Madonna's life and work in correlation to the historical and cultural moments of the 60's, 70's, 80's and so on. She uses Madonna as an avatar, as Gabriel has stated, to study the history of Occident in the last 60 years. The author is obviously a Madonna fan but she maintains an objective point of view overall. She defends Madonna though when it comes to acting and movie roles she has played and she gives her credit as an artist. I loved that she divided the book in 6 parts, naming each one in honor of the place or country Madonna has lived in, suggesting that the cultural environment has always shaped her.I mean, I could go on and on, but I want to encorage anyone (wether you are a fan or not) to buy this book because you will learn and discover not only facts about Madonna, but about Occident history.
