You can Trust McDavid
What should other customers know? First off, not everyone needs this brace. I've seen complaints that it's too bulky, which means those people needed a compression sleeve. As discrete as this brace is, it's not a compression sleeve. I understand that some people have a problem pulling it on or off. Buy one size larger. The laces will tighten the brace as much or as little as you need. I've heard that this brace is restrictive. Well, yeah. That's what you bought it for. It's a brace. The materials were specifically chosen to help keep your ankles in place while they heal so they don't roll sideways or twist again. The brace also conforms to the shape of your ankles. I assure you from personal experience with this brace that you will be able to walk confidently or if you are an active athletic person, the brace will stabilize your gait while you play your sport. All the technical data you need to know is listed in the advertisement here on Amazon. My Story with this brace is simple. I walked on a broken ankle all summer long when I was a kid. Not a choice you give to a child. Years later, I severely twisted that same ankle (twice). Genetic disorders being what they are, I searched for a good brace and found McDavid. I bought one for each ankle and pretty much wore them for 16 hours every day (not recommended by my doctor at the time). It took roughly three years before they started breaking down. I bought my current pair (pictured) two years ago. They've held up pretty derned well. The tongue (weak spot) tore the stitches because I pulled too hard (oops). The bottom seam of one brace has begun splitting recently because my right foot is turning (nothing McDavid can do about it). I generally switch the braces every time I put them on so the stress doesn't shape the braces to a specific ankle and I don't wear them all day anymore either. Just wear them for as long as you need them. McDavid is the first and foremost name I search for in braces. I can trust that they are dependable. If you need a good brace for temporary relief of inconvenient injuries, trust McDavid. These braces will get the job done.

Best of the bunch
I had a bad sprain a number of years ago, and after it healed as much as it was going to, the orthopedic specialist recommended an ankle brace for strenuous workouts. I bought what he recommended at a local store, and it worked very well. Fast forward a number of years, my brace is showing significant wear, and I try looking for a replacement. Unfortunately we've moved, and the local stores in my new location don't carry anything like my old brace. I try a couple of braces, neither of them work well, and I give up. About a month ago, my old brace lost structural integrity and the search for a new brace becomes a necessity. I again try the local stores and strike out. It finally occurs to me to try Amazon, and they have a number of well-reviewed braces. This is the fourth one I tried. The first was both ineffective and uncomfortable, the second was so uncomfortable I had to remove it after two minutes because my foot hurt so badly, the third provided sufficient support but chafed my ankle and was far more complicated than this brace. Now I've found what I was looking for. This brace is both effective and comfortable. After four miles, my ankle is fine, with no issues from lack of support or from chafing. It turns out that my old brace was an earlier version of this. It seems kind of old-school, but it works better than anything else I've tried, and I'm planning to buy another as a backup. A couple of suggestions for use: 1) don't tighten the bottom two holes very tightly, but really crank down on the next two, as this seems to provide the best balance of comfort and support; and 2) when removing, only unlace the top two holes and loosen the bottom four, as this will allow removal and speed up replacing it.

Bought for Basketball to Prevent Sprained Ankles, Wear Them Every Time I Play, Multiple Times a Week
I use it while playing basketball as I'm a weak-legged, painfully mediocre player with a history or sprained ankles and I just happen to be taller than the other players in my group so I use my height to my advantage a lot (lots of jumps and landings). - The Brace obviously limits my movement in Basketball and makes me less agile than the players around me. But, that's just what you get for wearing the most protective Ankle Brace McDavid offered for Basketball! It may limit my agility significantly (especially against, shorter and faster players) but it has protected by ankles countless times (you can literally feel your ankle begin to turn/shift and then be pushed back in place by the brace which bring a smile to your face!) and increased my on court confidence tenfold! - If you play Basketball frequently you know how much injuries negatively effect confidence. In a sport where split-second decisions mean everything (even in pick up games!), all it takes is that hesitation when the man you are defending goes up or when you are near the basketball getting ready to elevate. All it takes is that second of hesitation for someone to be there to block you or corner you and you are frozen and forced to find a pass. This Ankle Brace has brought out my full potential on Defense and I have no fear going up to defend or get a rebound, I don't need to worry about my feet at all! It brings your confidence to where it should be, on the court! - WHY I GAVE THIS A 4-STAR AND NOT A 5: The Brace is as comfortable as you want it to be without sacrificing it's purpose when tied tightly. The only problem here is when you add on your shoes and tie them, the knot of your shoes meets at the bend in your foot (that upper arch) will be tight and put pressure on your foot during activities. This isn't debilitating or anything if you are wearing high socks like me, but it's not comfortable. - If using the Brace during Basketball, the loss of mobility in your Ankle I find, is made up by my Knee. The inability to bend my Ankle would force my Knee to move a bit for my Ankle when adjusting my position laterally (especially when "your man" has the ball and he is in front of you trying to fake you one way so he can crossover or just drive the opposite way). This put a lot more strain on my Knee than I would have wanted. But a simple Compression Sleeve on Knee kept/keeps my Knee flexible but resilient and after games, I find myself with very little strain/soreness compared to before. - Overall, this Ankle Brace is great, you only need one, just mentally be ready to put your force on the Ankle with the Brace a bit more than your other Ankle and you won't sprain either one. The laces will begin to fray a bit like any laces and the Brace does show wear and tear over extensive amounts of time. Great brace but when it eventually comes time to buy a new one, I will definitely look into new options before buying these expensive ones again (although I will most likely buy them again if not much has changed)! By no means are these worth the price or spectacular beyond belief so no customer loyalty, but I like what I bought and they perform well!

Quality Ankle Brace - McDavid Delivers Again!
For starters, we purchased the medium ankle brace first, and then the large ankle brace. The reason we purchased both was because we wanted one for each my wife and myself, but thought that the medium would fit me. My foot falls right between medium and large, so the medium was a little on the tight side. Especially with a swollen ankle/foot! The large size fit a LOT more comfortably. One big suggestion due to the above would be to anyone that falls right between medium/large to end up getting the larger size as it should suit your needs better. Its just a suggestion though! Don't kill the messenger (: Okay, onwards and forwards - to the meat and potatoes of the review. I've worn this thing literally dozens of times over the last 9 months or so, and its performed flawlessly. Its very comfortable, and I can fit it just fine in my shoes [K-Swiss, Etnies, DCs] and it fits a little tight in some Danner boots, but it is what it is. The shoe lace is plenty long, and what I do is after getting everything nice and tight before finally tying the laces, I wrap them once around on the top, and then tie 'em and voila, done. Its better than having loose lases roaming around your shoe and whatnot. For the price, its hard to beat it. Its a quality product as most [if not all] of McDavid's products are. Have only used a few [including knee braces] and they have all worked wonderfully. They do what they say they do, at a reasonable price. What's more to ask for? This ankle brace also helps prevent my foot from swelling [before taking it off and raising my ankle] when I am having certain issues, so there is a preventative aspect of it as well. We definitely recommend this for anyone needing an ankle brace. You will not be disappointed.

Quality Product and Supportive
My ankle measured 9", 1" above the protruding bone (per instructions) and I bought a medium. It fits well. I sprained my ankle badly hiking. After the swelling mostly went down I started using a wrap brace. It kept sliding off. I tried a compression wrap but it was tight and cut off circulation to my foot. When searching for a new brace I saw this item recommended on the website of a local foot and ankle specialist in my area. It offers great support and keeps my ankle from moving side to side. I have to loosen the whole thing and unlace the top 2-3 eyelits to put it on, unlike what the video shows. I also have to unlace it all the way down to the toes in order to take it off. I adjust the foot area then re-tighten the ankle area a few times to get the fit right for me. Longer laces might have been helpful, and I would not have been able to use this when my ankle was very swollen as it is hard to pull on easily. I am impressed with the quality and the ability to contour to the curve in my ankle. I tried it on and it does fit in my Sauconney running shoe. I am hoping it will work for support hiking and will update once I have worn it for a longer time period.

Works, but could be better
I wear a mens size 13 shoe and ordered the large size. I wear ankle braces when I play softball as I've had ankle issues in the past and want to avoid rolling my ankles any more than I already have. I've had a trusty ankle brace for years for my right ankle and when I tweaked my left I figured it was time to start wearing two. I wasn't able to find the brand I use on my right foot and so I bought this one. Structurally and material wise this is well made and is definitely tough enough for sports use. It has kept my ankle safe for the past season of softball and I will probably continue using it into the next season unless I can find a mate to my favored right ankle brace. The shortcomings of this unit are that it's not ankle specific so it has to accommodate your ankle bulge on either side and that lessens the stiffness they can build into it. I'm also flat-footed so this unit doesn't quite fit like it should for me. If you have high arches then it probably would not be an issue, but I do not so I end up with soreness on the instep of my foot after wearing it for a couple of hours. Lastly the laces are too short. I would prefer that they gave a few more inches of lace so when it's laced up you can tie a larger knot. As it is I can barely tie a bow and cannot tie a double knot over that. I've had to stop and re-tie it a few times during games which is a bit frustrating. Overall it's serviceable, definitely is well crafted, but could use a few minor fixes to be better.

Seems great, high quality
Haven't been using it long, but seems great, and high quality. I'll have to see if it lasts, but I would think so. I don't see how this type of product could be better than this. It fits great and restricting ankle motion how I wanted, to hopefully let me foot heal. It's slim enough I can even wear my slip-on shoes. Probably won't fit some shoes, but if they're somewhat loose it will. To save time, I'm lacing every other hole - works good enough for me.

Must have!!
I bought this brace about 2 months ago, and it have proven itself more than worth what I paid for it. I severely spranged my left ankle on Easter and it hadn't healed by June. (Still waiting on my doc to get me in to see it.) But I had to do something as I started back to work. This brace has proven itself. I work 10hr shifts standing on hard conceret floors receiving for a high volume warehouse. It is very physically demanding and requires a stable base (foot work); this brace supports!! My ankle has zero pain. There are a few things I will mention. First: I do lace this brace fairly tightly and wear low ankle socks, so I am starting to get rubbed raw at a few points. So, I suggest a high sock (mid calf). Also, for anyone concerned about having thicker ankles and calves... No worries. It laces and supports even you! It sure as hell does me! My ankle goes from 6in around and my calves are 23in. (Yeah, I know I have monster calves.) It fits just fine! It holds up well, supports, and I am very happy with this. If you have a high demand physically, or need something to help you heal... Stop looking and buy this one. Side note... This does affect my stride, as it is stiff! (Hence, why I bought it in the first place.)

Quite useless...
Nothing more than a canvas ‘sock’. It’s advertised as having ‘Steel medical stays for solid support’... where are they? I can literally roll the thing up into a ball with no resistance whatsoever! The picture seems to indicate that there are metal bars down both sides of the item which I thought would be perfect for my ‘wet spaghetti’ ligaments but it’s just stitching, nothing more. Also waited (or wasted) a month for it to be shipped from the U.S.... Returned and looking for something more suitable.
