Clear Serenity, Quiet Insight: T’ien-t’ai Chih-i’s Mo-ho chih-kuan, 3-volume set (Nanzan Library of Asian Religion and Culture, 1)

It will take me awhile to have a complete opinion on this. But as far as I can tell it seems to a well written and thoroughly annotated translation. It translates 7 of the 10 chapters of T'ien-t'ai Chih-i's Mo-ho chih-kuan, but is labeled a full translation. I'm guessing chapters 8-10 are not extant? The supplemental texts in Paul Swanson's volume 3, pp. 1815-1819, include a few pages from T'ien-t'ai's The Profound Meaning of the Lotus Sutra on the symbolism of the lotus blossom. As SGI practitioner of Nichiren Buddhism I had somewhat naively hoped to easily narrow down the sections Nichiren quoted. So far I haven't been able to get closer than chapter (identified as volume in SGI and Burton Watson translation). But most I have found so far reference either chapters (volumes) 1 or 5.

A lifetime work in translation that so clearly elucidates Chih-I's profound teaching that I can barely sleep.

This set of three volumes is on the Moho Chih Kuan which is the deepest teaching in the Three Thousand year history of Buddhism. I have STUDIED about 20+ pages of the first intro and of course have discovered that the writtings is concise and well done. Being a Buddhist practitioner of 40 yrs and well versed in many of the teachings I would estimate you should check back with me in about 2+ years for an opinion on this sensational work, the first in English EVER.

These books are very good, but the condition of the books is not so good because some books on the corner that i received was that the corner area of the book was folded

This transition of the Mo-ho Chih-Kuan (or Mohe Zhiguan) is monumental. 2280 pages, copious footnotes, plenty of supplementary material in the appendixes and... The translation reads very well. I am deeply grateful that to the translator for this work of love. I give it 6 stars. ;-)
