Can you fit water bottles in the side compartment?

Yes definitely. Got a good capacity for water bottles unlike some that have small side compartments that are hard to get bottles into. I just took this on holiday with me and it fitted so much and was excellent quality.

How does the usb work? It seems pointless

You plug a charger into the included lead inside the bag and then a small lead on the outside to your phone which can then sit in the outside pocket.
