Finally! A photographic archive of the legendary N.Y. Dolls
Flash back to 1973-74: I was an impressionable 12 year old rock fan, when I first saw the NEW YORK DOLLS on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert on TV. Immediately I realized that THIS was what Rock & Roll, and particularly Glam Rock was all about. I had just gotten my first electric guitar & was learning how to play. The Dolls' songs were catchy, easy to replicate, and most of all, COOL! Soon I was on my way to replicating the Dolls in any way I could. This book would have helped a lot in those days. There weren't a lot of photos of the Dolls in the magazines back in the day. This book is a treasure trove of rare & amazing shots by legendary rock photog Bob Gruen. I'd recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this legendary band. Much like my well worn vinyl, and CD's, and the awesome DVD Bob release a year ago, this is a "must have" for any fan of David JoHansen, Syl Sylvain, Arthur "Killer" Kane, Jerry Nolan, and Johnny Thunders.

It is what it is.
To be honest, I don't think Bob Gruen is exactly the greatest photographer. Also quite a few of these photos are pretty common. A handful are included in [some edditions of] Nina Antonia's biography. Some are easily found through google searches and in CD booklets. That said, it is nice to have all these photos of the boys in one place. There's a collection of quotes through it, some cute and funny. The cover of the book is actually a satin-silky type of fabric, which I just love. (Didn't know it when I ordered. I'd assumed it was just a regular old hardback book.)The boys are [were] all adorable, and as said it is nice to have all these photos in one place. The cuteness of the cover makes for an awesome coffee table book. (Solid color, too, easier to work with when decorating, yo.)

Pretty in Pink (and Red Patent Leather)
The New York Dolls importance as the missing link between glam and punk rock and their lasting influence on subsequent bands cannot be overstated, so it is good news that Bob Gruen has gathered together his very best photos of them, for this excellent book, that captures their in-yer-face streetwise attitude and the charm of their shambolic, but utterly compelling live performances so perfectly. This is a handsome production, that is appropriately bound in shocking pink satin-effect cloth, with their famous lipstick logo stamped in gold to the front, with the rear cover blurb attached in the form of stickers. There is no biographical detail to speak of (Nina Antonia and Kris Needs cover that in their respective books on the Dolls), but the photos are accompanied by extended and informative captions throughout.Mark my words, this is set to be a collectors piece (I bought my copy, new, for less than £10 including postage, which was a steal), so get this before it goes out of print.Highly recommended (as is Bob's similarly wonderful book on The Clash).
