Coronation Street - Best of 1980-1989 [ITV] - [Network] - [DVD]

When Corrie was still a real kitchen sink drama full of good humor. These 1980s episodes hold up very well.
I felt a bit daft at first for buying this box-set, but those feelings soon passed once I started plowing through these 1980s era episodes and have enjoyed every minute of them. The standard of the writing, and not to mention the characters and performances here, is vastly superior to the depressing and grim programme Coronation Street has sadly become today. With this box-set I feel that I am watching a proper kitchen sink drama loaded with northern wit. With that said: I have been thoroughly entertained and amused by these episodes and it makes me wonder what the hell happened to Coronation Street. I suppose showing the programme five nights a week, instead of two, had a lot to do with the decline in the quality, along with the ideas of new young script-writers that think only rape and murder will put bums on seats which is a shame, but times have to change.

Excellent
Watched this after my mother passed and so glad I did the pleasant memories of me and make remember how good it was. The new generation do not realise how good it was.

eg jan -feb it started in feb so where’s January s episode
I bought these dvds because I thought I was buying episodes that I couldn’t find on you tube the episodes are not in order so you’re getting into a episode but the stories don’t continue from what you have watched there are still episodes missing so I’m disappointed I thought I was getting what I paid for there isn’t a whole years worth of episodes on one disc even though it says 1980 to 1989

Ah, the nostalgia!
I was just a child when Corrie was on in the 80's so it has been great fun to look back on all these episodes and see the old characters again; brassy Bet, acid tongued Ivy, Gail and Brian as newlyweds, cheeky Fred, the eccentric Hilda and my personal favourite Elsie Tanner. There is a lot of forgotten humour in this decade with classics like Bet and Betty in the car in the lake, the drama of Deirdre's affair with Mike and the sadness of Stan's death. The 90's boxset is on my list when it comes down in price!

MUST HAVE!!
An absolutely essential box set, especially for fans of the 70s/80s period. So many classic past characters .. the Ogdens, Len Fairclough, Annie Walker, Mike Baldwin, Fred Gee, Eddie Yeats .. the list goes on and on.With 80 episodes spanning 1980-1989 (ten for each year), this is a hugely enjoyable trip down memory lane. The episodes are too many to list in full but thankfully a booklet is enclosed featuring a brief synopsis of each episode, along with the original transmission date. Highlights include the sad death of Renee Roberts, the climax of the Deirdre/Mike affair, the hilarious antics of the Ogdens (along with Stan's terribly sad funeral episode), the Rovers fire, Alan Bradley's collision with a tram, Hilda's farewell, Brian Tilsley's grisly demise, and many, many more. This appears to be a repackaging of the expensive (and terribly bulky) ten-disc box set "The 80s" that surfaced a while back. Thankfully, this time around the box itself is much more discreet (about the size of an old video case) and the price is much more reasonable. Quality of the source footage is extremely good and although there are no extras (I think 80 episodes of classic Corrie is enough on it's own!) this is a truly superb collection. I've also bought the 70s box which, again, I recommend very highly.
