I don’t see anywhere where it is UL approved. It has ETL on the bottom label. I’m not terribly happy with this kettle. It sounds like a jet taking off each heating. The cover doesn’t open wide enough to fill with water easily. And there is no water gauge on the side(which was my bad). I had my last kettle for 20 years made by an American company. This has an American brand name made in China.

Yes, you can remove it. In fact sometimes I boil the water, then add lose tea and then I pit the mess to filter the brewed tea.
