No, the way they are designed, the moisture from the hens falls through the shavings and is absorbed by a brown paper backing. The solid waste fall through the shaving too. You can shake the mat to clean out the solids but eventually you will want to replace the nesting pad. I replace my nesting pads about every 16 weeks more or less depending on my birds. I have 24 hens which use 7 nests, but as you know, hens are particular about which nest is the favorite. So that nest pad get replaced as often as 8 weeks. For me, the convenience is worth the cost.

what are these pads actually made of? can they be composted?

They are excelsior with a brown paper backing. I don't compost mine because the excelsior never seems to break down.

Do the birds eat them? Has anyone had problems with birds that do eat them?

My birds scratch them up quite a bit, but I've not seen any indication that they are eating them. They seem to like using them, as they almost never lay outside the boxes.

Are these able to be composted?

The backing has some qualities that hold the moisture and not sure they would break down properly. I would not compost these. Put them in your burn pit.
