Masters of Spanish Comic Book Art.
This was a pleasant find.A copiously illustrated hardback book, it provides a fine showcase of the graphic and comic-book work of some 80 Spanish artists past and present who have provided artwork for a range of international publishing concerns including many well-known UK titles. The book offers a good mix of black and white panels and spreads from classic comics together with cover art for comic-books (such as the old Fleetway War/Battle picture library magazines and DC Thomson`s rival Commando comics) and cover art for pulp fiction magazines. As someone who grew up on a diet of comics for most of the 60s, I recognise the style of a lot of the work here as – in common with many artists of my generation – I learned to draw by copying from them. (I`m delighted to see spreads from “Slave Of The Screamer” and “Return Of The Claw” from the Valiant which I remember well). The texts provide a useful outline of the industry of the period covered and the contribution these stylish and often innovative artists made, with brief profiles of some (but not all) of the artists showcased. An excellent volume; do use the “Look inside” option above for a sample of the content.

Truly awesome collection of a vast range of Spanish artists showing a large selection of covers as well as book covers, European mags (many probably tricky to get unless you are living in Spain or happy for a long search through auction sites), original art, 60s UK comics such as Jackie, etc. Some really beautiful art and as someone else said in a review, quite frustrating that there is so much out there yet to be discovered. Wish all comic reference books could be this good. This is one amazing reference book and one that will lead you off into many new areas to explore. If only we still had such a comic industry in this country nowadays.
