Hi, i have read that Sebastian Matte Putty is discontinued-- have these expired?

The ones I just purchased have a 04/2015 date on them.

is this a good product to use in replacement to gel on your edges? i have fine edges and gel tends to break them off.

It does not keep the edges together like a gel or pomade would. It will tame fly-aways a little bit, but the product is not strong enough to completely take care of that.

what hair length is this optimal for?

My hair is short, not very short, and wavy. It works very well for that type and style of hair. I use this product to make my hair more "piecey".
